Our useful tips for writing love letters will help you make a good impression on your loved one. There is hardly anything more romantic than a love letter.

The classic love letter

The love letter is a bit outdated and still a beautiful and romantic gift idea. Once you have found the courage to write a love letter, you face the problem: Which words are the right ones? How can you express yourself so that the letter arrives well? There are a few tips to keep in mind:

1) Stay authentic

A tip not to be underestimated: be yourself! A love letter that does not suit the writer does not go down well. A figurative and Romanesque word choice is beautiful and fits in a love letter – if it suits you. With a more matter-of-fact type, flowery words are out of place and would ridicule the letter or make it unbelievable. Write as you speak in everyday life.

2) A love letter is individual

A love letter is written for a specific person and in a specific situation. You want to make the recipient happy and express your feelings. Therefore, do not copy phrases from other love letters! Don’t use old-fashioned phrases like “I always dream of you.” This makes a letter seem impersonal and cliche.

Instead, think about what you love and value about the person, what you’re grateful for, or what you find attractive about them. This makes your letter unique and the recipient can identify with it.

3) Think before you write

This tip for writing love letters also seems to be self-evident. However, in the rush of emotion, there are times when you start writing without thinking about the message first. The recipient also notices this.

Therefore, take your time to think about what you want to say to the recipient. Do you want to win back your lost love or inspire a long relationship? Or is it, for example, about the first confession of your love, or do you want to say thank you for a wonderful time with your partner? Once you’ve got the message clear, think about what you want to do with the content of the letter. Do you want to address specific situations, events that brought you together, and shared memories? Would you like to express your hope for the future together? Both can also be combined in a meaningful way. It is important that you know the content of the love letter before you start writing it.

4) See the relationship from the recipient’s point of view

When you write a love letter, you want the recipient to feel spoken to and flattered. Therefore, before writing, you should put yourself in the shoes of this person. What wishes does she have for the relationship or for you? What is her view of the relationship in general? You can incorporate the insights you gain from this into the letter.

5) Appearance matters

When it comes to a love letter, it’s not just the message that’s important, but how you deliver it. In times of SMS and Co, this tip is particularly important. Your letter should be something special, for someone special to you!

A love letter should be handwritten and legible. This gives the whole thing a personal touch and shows that you took the time for the letter and thus for the person. You should also use nice stationary and an envelope. A high-quality paper signals appreciation. A simple computer printout, on the other hand, is not well received.

6) Get inspired

The fact that the love letter should be individual and tailored to the recipient does not mean that you should not get any suggestions. Inspiration is everywhere: in poetry, in music, in scents. Sources of inspiration put you in the right mood to write the love letter. You can also start with a short quote if that’s appropriate for you and the recipient. Thus, a love letter can be a great idea and the basis for long-term relationships.
