The terrible news just went through the media: whole grain and long grain rice are said to cause cancer. Rice contains arsenic, a carcinogenic substance that does not completely disappear even during cooking. Professor Andy Meharg has now tested which cooking method is most effective in eliminating arsenic from rice.

Rice contaminated with arsenic

Rice is one of the most common side dishes and is considered healthy. Unfortunately, the healthy grain also contains pollutants such as arsenic. “Öko-Test” just reported the shocking results: long-grain and whole-grain rice are so heavily contaminated with pollutants and carcinogenic substances that the consumption of these types of rice is even completely discouraged.

The rice plants absorb these substances through contaminated groundwater. Especially with whole grain and parboiled rice, the load of toxins is higher, since the outer shell of the rice grain is still attached, or the harmful substances from it have passed into the interior of the grain.

“Oko-Test” and Professor Andy Meharg therefore always recommend basmati rice: This is the least contaminated.

Cook rice properly

Queens University Belfast professor Andy Meharg has researched the best way to cook rice. He examined various cooking and preparation methods and to what extent these changed the arsenic content in food.

In the first variant, the scientist boiled the rice in about twice the amount of water. This is one of the most popular ways to cook rice. But the arsenic content was only reduced by 16 percent.

The second attempt: cook rice with five times the amount of water. Here, the arsenic content has already been reduced by 50 percent – although this value is still alarmingly high.

The third method was actually the most successful: Mehard was able to reduce the proportion of the toxin to just 16 percent. To do this, the rice must be soaked in water overnight and then washed in a sieve under running water until the water runs clear before preparation. Five times the amount of water is then added to the pot to boil.

The three rules for cooking rice:

  1. Soak rice.
  2. Always wash rice!
  3. Boil rice in five times the amount of water.

Myth or truth: Certain eating habits are said to be due to blood type. Conversely, the blood group diet should make it easier to lose weight. However, today’s critics advise against this diet.

What blood groups are there?

The first blood transfusions were carried out as early as the 17th century, but without the knowledge of the possible incompatibility of donor and recipient blood.

Thanks to the Austrian doctor Karl Landsteiner, the so-called AB0 system was implemented. A, B, 0 and AB stand for a specific surface structure of the red blood cells. This is genetically determined and thus inheritable. It is important to note that each person can only have one blood group.

Blood group A: contains antigens type A (antibodies against type B)
Blood group B: contains type B antigens (antibodies against type A)
Blood group AB: contains antigens type A and type B (no antibodies)
Blood group 0: no antigens (antibodies against type A and type B)
Accordingly, not just any random person can donate blood to all blood groups. Blood group 0 is the most compatible and can donate to all blood groups. Blood group A can only donate to type A or type B. Blood group B can only also donate to type B or type AB. And lastly, blood group AB, which can only donate to type AB. The blood group distribution in Germany is 43 percent blood group A, 41 percent blood group 0, 11 percent blood group B and blood group AB is the least common at 5 percent.

What does blood type say about your eating habits?

The author Peter J. D’Adamo already attracted a lot of attention in 1996 with his book “4 Blood Types”*. The basic message: Everyone should adjust their food according to their blood group. He describes blood group 0 as the dominant hunter-cavern type that needs meat. Blood group AB, on the other hand, are gentle vegetarians, and for blood group B, everything else belongs on the table besides dairy products.

blood group 0

Blood group A was created in the Neolithic period. These people would have a tolerant immune system but a rather sensitive gastrointestinal tract. That is why a vegetarian diet with lots of fruit and vegetables is very beneficial for this type A. This type can also eat small portions of fish several times a week.

Which diet should suit which blood group?

Unlike strict diets, a blood type diet doesn’t require you to count calories. In addition, the blood type diet for all four types relies heavily on fruits and vegetables, but very little on fiber and other necessary nutrients. Furthermore, according to D’Adamo, the so-called lectins play an important role in the blood group diet or the corresponding specific form of nutrition. These are

Blood group 0 (meat eaters) should avoid whole wheat products because of the gluten. With the exception of butter and farmer’s cheese, all cow’s milk products are rather indigestible and thus make the metabolism and weight loss more difficult. According to D’Adamo, legumes are not an important part of their diet because they tend to cause digestive problems because of the lectins, which are said to lead to blood clotting. People with blood group A (vegetarians

People with blood group B (omnivores) would only have to limit themselves to poultry, wheat and rye products. Almost all types of vegetables and fruits are well tolerated by this blood group, although they would only tolerate a few legumes. A lot of cheese, milk and meat would also be well tolerated. For people with blood group AB (The Enigmatic

Criticism of the blood group diet

As plausible as all this may sound, there are still a few points to criticize about the diet:
D’Adamo is wrong: The blood types did not develop one after the other, but in parallel.
No scientific study has yet proven that lectins can lead to blood clotting, which makes them intolerable. By cooking legumes, for example, they are easily neutralized, which means that everyone can digest them easily.
The diet is partly very low in fiber and based too much on animal proteins, which is not environmentally friendly or sustainable. Too much meat can also lead to inflammation, gout or urinary stones.
Giving up certain foods is not healthy. The DGE also advises against it and recommends a balanced diet with all the necessary nutrients.
CONCLUSION: The blood group diet is therefore strongly discouraged. Still, this knowledge can serve as background information as to why some foods taste better to you or are easier to digest than others. Follow your instinct and eat what you feel like in a balanced way. Because your gut feeling usually knows quite intuitively what is good for you and what is not. count on it.

This method is supposed to help you lose weight: The Coburg chief physician Prof. Dr. Johannes Kraft recommends the 3×16 method. In this article we reveal what’s behind it and why it doesn’t just improve your weight.

Intermittent Fasting: Get rid of belly fat with the 3×16 method

Unhealthy fats and proteins are only burned if no carbohydrates are consumed for at least twelve hours. Specifically, a 3×16 fast means that no carbohydrates are allowed to be consumed on at least three days per week for a period of 16 hours each. For example, you can skip breakfast or dinner on these days.

On the other days you can eat normally. But in order to successfully and consistently avoid carbohydrates, you have to know where they are found:
All grain products such as bread, muesli and flakes
All fruits, fruit juices and sodas
Alcohol and any kind of sugar
milk, potatoes and rice products
Processed products such as sausage or finished products
Play it safe with these products, which are guaranteed to contain no or hardly any carbohydrates:
Lettuce, cucumber and Chinese cabbage
Broccoli, zucchini, oils and nuts
Lactose-free dairy products such as hard cheese, eggs, fish and lean, unbreaded meat or ham
Seitan, lupins and tofu

For most people, the easiest thing to do is to drink only black coffee, tea, or water in the morning three times a week and skip the rest of breakfast. If carbohydrates were last consumed at 9 p.m. in the evening, fat burning does not start again until 9 a.m. In order for belly fat to be burned to a relevant extent, carbohydrates should not be eaten again until 1 p.m. at the earliest. Alternatively, instead of breakfast, dinner can be omitted. All that matters is that you get a 16-hour carbohydrate break.

The 3×16 method has a preventative effect against diabetes. But even if you already have diabetes, you can benefit from this fasting method. A significant reduction in the medication required is often achieved. However, before you start fasting, you should discuss your approach with your doctor. A fasting guide for diabetes can also be supportive. However, you don’t have to do without the enjoyment and joy of eating with friends and family. On the days when you are not fasting, you can eat normally.

Previous successes of the 3 x 16 method

Prof. Dr. Johannes Kraft observed benefits of “3 x 16” intermittent fasting are many. In addition to reducing abdominal fat and reducing insulin resistance, there are some other positive effects that should not be ignored. These are the advantages of the method:
Fast visible and noticeable success
Great reduction in belly fat
Physical and mental performance improvement
Simple fasting method that is individually adaptable
No ping pong effect
According to the current state of science, the risk of vascular diseases, dementia and certain types of cancer is reduced
The method costs nothing
Prof. Dr. The fasting method developed by Kraft and his team has been proven to be successful. Every year around 300 patients come to Prof. Dr. Kraft, who also gives lectures on the subject to around a thousand listeners a year. The success speaks for itself: the method is successful in over 80 percent of the subjects. Due to this high success rate, it is not only disseminated by patients, but also by doctors and universities.

You should peel the celery before eating it – regardless of whether you dip it or prepare it as an oven vegetable. The interior of the perennials and the hard threads are particularly important. We’ll show you how to remove them.

Clean and peel the celery

1. Trim celery:
First you separate the stems from each other and remove the leaves inside the celery.
Then cut off the bottom ends of the perennials. It is best to remove everything white to avoid bitter substances.
You should also cut off the top ends once they have dried.
2. Wash Celery:
Now you can wash the celery to get rid of dirt: make sure to also remove the dirt from the grooves and clean the celery thoroughly.
Hot water and a vegetable brush are best for this.

3. Peel the celery

After cleaning, you can remove the hard fibers. You can use either a knife or a peeler to do this:
Use the knife to cut about 1mm into the celery and then pull off the thread between the knife and your thumb.
If you use a vegetable peeler, you’ll remove the threads just as effectively. However, you will also remove much of the edible celery.
Tip: Basically, when peeling and cleaning celery, you can proceed in a similar way to rhubarb. If you are used to peeling rhubarb, it is also very easy to peel celery.

Once you have washed and peeled the celery, you can eat it as finger food with a delicious dip, or fry, steam or cook a celery soup.

With the Konmari method, you can effectively clean up and clear out. Things that you don’t actually need accumulate quickly in the household. And according to the tidying expert, we should get rid of the unnecessary ballast. Consequently, their Konmari principle helps to create order.

With this method, you will keep track of your wardrobe, bookshelves, and your documents in the future. You get rid of unnecessary things that you no longer need. And that makes you feel freer and happier.

The Konmari principle

The most important basic principle is the time factor. Because the mucking out takes place over a relatively short period of time of a maximum of six months. The inventor Marie Kondo distinguishes between categories when it comes to correct and effective tidying up. Consequently, the procedure is not based on rooms, but on the degree of difficulty and emotional connection. This means that categories with little emotional connection come first, as these are easier to let go of.

As a result, you start with the issue of clothing and end with cleaning out memorabilia. The Konmari Method isn’t about uncomfortable truths or why it’s all piled up and messy. It’s about trusting your own judgment and regaining self-confidence. The basic principles of the method are as follows:

  • Touching each piece is important in the Konmari method. It is about the sensations that objects trigger. If the part you’re holding makes you uncomfortable, then get rid of it, even if it’s not broken.
  • Assignment of a permanent place. The objects that remain at the end are given a permanent place. Accordingly, clothes should not lie in piles in the closet. Because that is far too confusing, the things below lose their existence.

1) Tidy up the closet with Konmari

Since the closet is actually always full, you can clean it out at any time. Because you couldn’t really part with the last clean-out campaign and something new has also been added. So now try the Konmari wardrobe method. This means that it is no longer just ancient or broken parts that end up in the old clothes bag. Now everything is thrown out that doesn’t make you happy. Since everyone has an intuitive yes-no feeling when they pick something up, you should now trust your feelings. Shoes that pinch or dresses that don’t fit perfectly should be removed. Also, note our tips for a fresh scent in the wardrobe.

2) Clear out books and DVDs

Many people have an emotional connection to books and cannot throw them away. What’s on a bookshelf says something about a person. But often the books are there only to impress others and to give the impression of being well-read. For example, university books are still on the shelves after 20 years. Hardly anyone reads a thriller where the end is known a second time. The purpose of a book, according to Marie Kondo, is to convey information or entertainment through a beautiful story. Once the book has been read, it has served its purpose. You can earn good money on the internet with books and DVDs. Because you can sell them on eBay or other portals. As a result, you have room for something new.

3) Arrange documents using the Konmari method

After you have cleared out the closet and your books with Konmari, documents and papers come next. You should put the important ones in folders that are properly labeled. But anything that doesn’t necessarily need to be removed should go. This includes reminders of the tuition fees when you have long since finished your studies, the operating instructions for the washing machine, or the old bank statements that are now available digitally. In addition, note our tips for clearing out a messy apartment.

4) Tidy up the odds and ends with the Konmari principle

The small stuff is usually the largest category. With supplies and medicine, it’s pretty easy. Anything that has expired goes in the trash without a second thought. There are other things that can also be cleaned up here, such as the corkscrew that nobody can handle, or the decoration that has never been used. So separate yourself from the following things in this category. Also, read our article on tidying up and decluttering the kitchen.

  • kitchen utensils
  • Stocks
  • medication
  • decorative items
  • office supplies
  • digital odds and ends, like newsletters

5) The hardest category – Memories

The memories come at the end. These are the most difficult part. But after the previous categories and the practice you have gained, it should be a little easier for you. For example, there are postcards lying around that someone sent at some point. Still, it’s hard to throw them away. Marie Kondo says that some objects just have to serve a purpose. The postcard gave joy when it arrived and thus served its purpose. With photos, it is even more difficult. But often we have many snapshots that are of poor quality and can be deleted. As a result, only the good pictures that evoke beautiful memories remain. And these should be stored securely so that nothing is lost.
