Natural home remedies help with head lice, although this is sometimes disputed. The home remedies are an attractive alternative to gentle treatment against lice on the scalp and hair roots. If you have lice, home remedies are worth trying. Especially for pregnant women or small children who could be sensitive to chemicals.

Preparations for lice control

In all cases of lice infestation, a good lice comb is very valuable and actually essential for head lice and their eggs, the nits. Very narrow teeth on the comb, with a distance between each other of approx. 0.2 to 0.3 millimeters, give the lice comb magical abilities when it comes to removing lice from the hair.

Light-colored plastic combs are better than metal combs because they are softer and less painful when combing through the hair. The light color also makes it easier to see the dark lice and eggs on the lice hunt. Use the lice comb before each lice treatment.

Home remedies for head lice

If you don’t want to use chemicals or expensive drugs from the pharmacy to fight the pests, there are natural home remedies for lice:

  1. Essential oils such as citronella, rosemary, tea tree, lavender, or rose geranium. Lice hate the smell of essential oils. Two drops of the oil are mixed with coconut oil or olive oil. So that the hair soaks, especially on the nape of the neck, on the temples, and on the ears. Then pull a shower cap over it and wrap all your hair in a towel and leave it on for 1 to hours. Then wash your hair with lots of shampoos. You can add a drop of essential oil to the shampoo again. In the pharmacy, there are various lice remedies that contain essential oils.
  2. Massage olive oil into hair and comb hair with a comb soaked in olive oil. The lice should get caught in the home remedy and suffocate. Warm the olive oil and then massage it into the hair and scalp. Leave the oil on for several hours or overnight. Then use the lice comb to remove the eggs and nits. Finally, wash your hair thoroughly with a normal shampoo. Gladly enriched with a drop of tea tree or lavender oil.
  3. Vinegar water has a paralyzing effect against lice. Make vinegar water using one part household vinegar and two parts lukewarm water. Then massage this mixture into the scalp for ten minutes and leave it on.
  4. Various lice remedies containing vinegar are available in pharmacies.
  5. Vaseline and mayonnaise will suffocate the lice. This is used to smear the hair and cover the hair under a plastic bag or garbage bag. Then wrap in a towel. Then this “anti-lice pack” should stay on the hair all night to suffocate any lice.
  6. Pick up wood vinegar and spread it undiluted on the hair and scalp. Then cover the hair with a bathing cap and leave it on for about 2 hours and then wash it off thoroughly with warm water and shampoo. If the hair shampoo contains willow bark extract and coconut oil, the hair acts as a deterrent to new lice.

Post-treatment Comb out the nits

After all hair treatments, you must comb the hair thoroughly with the lice comb. In order to catch the lice better, damp hair is best treated with a commercially available conditioner, which makes the small insects a little more sluggish. Then the hair is combed from the hairline strand by strand and the “result” is thoroughly removed with a towel. In this way, it is possible to check whether and how many hair lice and lice eggs (nits) have been recorded. Rinse the nit comb thoroughly with hot vinegar water after the treatment.
