Baby equipment is important. But what do I need? Many want to go straight away and buy everything important. But it can be very useful to first make a baby equipment list. So that nothing is missing, we have a checklist for you.
An initial kit for the baby makes sense. A checklist can help you to keep track of things because a lot comes together. But before you rush off, ask friends and acquaintances. Maybe they have something left. Or maybe there’s another baby shower where you’ll get quite a bit.
Well prepared for baby’s arrival
With the birth of a child, the new parents face many changes and the home must also be adapted to the new residents. Therefore, parents-to-be often devote themselves to the many items that are essential for a baby’s initial equipment even during pregnancy. Here you will find an overview of all the important items that you can obtain before the birth. This gives you plenty of time for your offspring in the first few weeks after the birth. In addition, note our tips for newborn babies.
1) For sleeping: a baby cot or bassinet
In the first few weeks of life, a baby spends a lot of time sleeping. Therefore, the right sleeping environment for your baby is initially the most important place in your home. At first, a newborn usually sleeps in the parent’s bedroom. Extra beds are particularly practical here. For the time after that, cots are used. In addition, an additional bassinet is useful for the child’s sleep during the day, since you can easily move it. So that the offspring sleeps comfortably, a sleeping bag should not be missing from the initial equipment. A sleeping light and a music box close by also have a calming effect
2) Changing table, diapers, and toiletries
You will also need diaper changing equipment immediately after the birth. This includes, above all, a changing table on which you can change your offspring’s diapers. A changing pad is usually placed on such a changing unit. It is padded and easy to clean. The pad also protects the baby from falling. Depending on the weight of the child at birth, you should buy the right diapers and there is also room for care products on the changing table. Please also note our tips for changing and diapering babies.
- Baby care aids
- Changing table with changing mat
- Appropriate size diapers
- Toiletries such as cleaning wipes, baby powder, and cream
3) Baby clothes, textiles, and storage space
The clothes are also on your baby’s initial equipment list. In the first months of life, this consists mainly of underwear, socks, rompers, tops, and tights. In addition, hats are important, at least in the cold season, to protect the baby from cooling down. Bibs or burp cloths are also useful. In addition to the clothes, some textiles are needed, such as a pacifier, bath towel, and washcloth, cushions for the bassinet, and pram and blankets. You can order baby fashion and baby products online. This is usually very convenient. In addition, note our tips on sterilizing pacifiers and cleaning bottles, as well as tips on cleaning baby clothes.

4) All about food: high chair and bottles
If you want to breastfeed your baby after birth, then a breastfeeding pillow is sufficient as initial nutritional equipment. It allows you to be in a more comfortable position while breastfeeding. If the baby is bottle-fed, you will need a bottle warmer to heat the baby food in addition to the bottle and baby milk. Also, read our alternatives and supplements to breastfeeding. As soon as your offspring is a little older, you can feed them in a high chair. The milk is then replaced with purchased or homemade baby food and later with solid food. Highchairs that grow with your child and can be adjusted in many ways are ideal.
