Tips at the Bathing Lake in Summer

Summer is getting closer and with it, you also want to spend a day or two at a bathing lake? Below you will find some valuable tips and suggestions so that the planned vacation day at the beach does not literally fall into the water. Above all, the topics of sun protection, beach luggage and clothing, the best place to lie, and the right behavior in the water are discussed.

Pay attention to sun protection at the bathing lake

If you don’t like swimming in the pool, you can go to the bathing lake. Even if a German bathing lake is not the Adriatic Sea or the Caribbean, you should still pay attention to adequate sun protection to avoid sunburn. The reflections from the light sand and the water surface should not be underestimated and significantly increase the UV exposure compared to a normal stay outdoors. In spring, you can choose a sun protection factor of 50, which is even more important for children and people with sensitive skin.

For sun-accustomed beachgoers, at least an SPF of 20-30 should be used. It is advisable to apply lotion in the bathroom at home before you leave. This doesn’t take up valuable beach time and also allows for greater mindfulness. If you want to avoid excessive UV exposure, it is best to visit the bathing lake in the morning until around 11 a.m. or in the afternoon from 3 p.m. If available, taking a small parasol with you can’t be wrong.

This belongs in the bathing lake luggage

For a pleasant stay at the beach, it is actually essential to take a larger blanket with you. After all, you don’t want to sit in the sand all the time, especially since it can get quite hot when the outside temperatures are high. A ball, books, magazines, or a few board games can help pass the time. Be sure to take enough liquid with you. Since you can quickly be attacked by cravings after a longer stay in the water, you should also pack a few small snacks, fruit, biscuits, or sandwiches for the perfect picnic at the bathing lake.

A cool box is recommended for storage. If you plan to have a barbecue on the beach, you should find out about the beach regulations beforehand. Do not forget sunscreen and, if necessary, sunglasses. Of course, if you go into the water, you also need a towel or, even better, a beach towel. A little change for an ice cream can’t go amiss, but it’s better not to bring unnecessary valuables with you, especially if you expect to lose sight of your own spot on the beach for a long time.

The beachwear

First of all: Don’t necessarily put on your best and most beautiful shoes on the beach. A few grains of sand always get in, which will probably annoy you for days and, in the worst case, lead to blisters when you visit the beach in your everyday shoes. Sandals are of course predestined for going to the beach. Otherwise, light-colored, comfortable clothing is recommended. Even a sun hat or a baseball cap can’t hurt if you spend a lot of time in the blazing sun. However, given the hot temperatures during the day, many beach visitors tend to forget to bring a jacket or sweater. But these will do a good job if the weather changes suddenly or if you stay until the evening.

Choose the right place at the bathing lake

Arriving at the beach, the first thing to do is to find a suitable place to lie. If you choose one close to the water, you won’t have far to go for a swim. Places at the upper end of the beach usually allow a better view of the landscape. Instead of lying in the blazing sun, most people find it more comfortable to choose a spot in the semi-shade. Be sure to pay attention to the course of the sun if you spend several hours on the beach. Instead of being satisfied with the first place that comes along, it can also make more sense to first search the entire beach area and only then make a decision.

Look for out-of-the-way spots and try not to place yourself directly on the main paths, because even if the number of visitors is still low when you arrive, this can change quickly during the course of the day. It goes without saying that the beach site will be left in at least the condition in which it was found. If a storm is coming, you should protect yourself from the storm and leave the water immediately. It is best to go to a nearby building or a car.

Jumping into the cool water

Avoid jumping into the water directly from the hot beach, especially on hot days. Acclimate your body gradually, stepping into the water only up to your knees first, then up to your hips, and then up to your navel, waiting a few minutes between each step. This protects the circulatory system and is essential, especially for sensitive people. Never jump into unfamiliar places and watch where you step.

Unfortunately, broken glass bottles are still a regular nuisance on some busy beaches. But mussel shells, sharp stones, or twigs lying in the water can also lead to injuries. Only swim as far as you dare. Longer swimming tours should only be undertaken in pairs, especially if there is no lifeguard on duty. After being in the water, you should always dry yourself immediately and exchange your wet swimwear for dry clothing if you don’t want to go back into the water. Otherwise, a cold will probably remind you of the beach stay for days.
