Order scampi, pay for scampi, but get fobbed off with significantly cheaper shrimp – this is the reality (probably not only) in Hamburg’s restaurants. Testers from the NDR program “Markt” came to this sobering conclusion.

The test eaters on the “Markt” show ordered scampi from three Italian restaurants in Hamburg, as well as from two branches of the upscale chains Vapiano and Gosch. The result: Although the noble crustaceans were expressly requested in all cases, the significantly cheaper shrimp ended up on the plate in all five cases.

The lab test

How could the testers be so sure? They sent a DNA analysis of each dish to an independent lab. The scientists found:

  • King prawns (scientific name Penaeus monodon) were served at the three Italian restaurants
  • Vapiano and Gosch passed off shrimp of the genus Litopenaeus vannamei (also known as white tiger shrimp) as scampi

Cheating is forbidden

In Germany, only two animal species may be sold as scampi: Metanephrops spp. and Nephrops norvegicus, also known as “Kaisergranat” in Germany.

The uncovered cheating should not be an isolated case. The Hamburg competition center announced that it wanted to take action against this practice based on the research by the NDR magazine. “If scampi are promised, scampi must also be on the plate,” quotes NDR Peter Brammer from the Hamburg competition center. According to Brammer, the Gosch restaurant is now threatened with a warning.

That’s what the restaurant owners say

While the Gosch company has remained silent, Vapiano has already reacted to the reporter’s research: They have changed the name scampi to gamberetti on all menus.

What is the difference between scampi and shrimp?

Scampi look like the lobster’s dainty little sister with their powerful claws and broad tail.

The shrimp is a different animal species, and the differences are also clear visually: shrimp only have antennae, no claws, and a much narrower tail.

A cheat sheet contains the most important information. for the upcoming exam or presentation. Therefore, use a cheat sheet as a study sheet instead of cheating. Thus, the learning success increases enormously. We have collected the most important tips for creating learning slips.

Use cheat sheets to learn

It may seem strange at first, but in fact, a well-constructed cheat sheet encourages learning. So instead of breaking your child’s habit of writing cheat sheets, simply set up new rules for using the cheat sheet. Thus, the cheat sheet becomes a useful learning sheet. Consequently, we show how your child can learn better and more effectively, making cheating unnecessary.

1) Brainstorm and structure the topic

If the topic of a work or exam is known, then brainstorming on the most important points of the topic will help. Your child can then create a detailed and structured learning sheet. Accordingly, numbers, data and facts on the subject of the exam can be easily learned. If your child has difficulties formulating the topics or with spelling, these areas should of course be practiced and trained separately. But that also works great with the creation of a learning sheet.

2) Instructions for a cheat and cheat sheet

To ensure that learning with the cheat sheet is a success, it makes sense to first create a comprehensive learning sheet. Your child will learn the important things. In the course of the learning phase, your child should keep reducing this learning sheet so that it gradually becomes a cheat sheet. Consequently, the most important tips for orientation:

  1. Bring all the content of the exam to one or more DIN-A-4 pages. Blank sheets or checkered sheets are good for this.
  2. Write everything down by hand so that you can remember it better.
  3. Mark individual subject areas with different colors to create a kind of “map”.
  4. Try to capture only essential points in bullet points, tables or formulas.
  5. Only write down long sentences and quotations in exceptional cases.
  6. From now on, always carry the cheat sheet or learning sheet in your trouser or jacket pocket.
  7. Read the cheat sheet at every opportunity, i.e. on the bus, while waiting, before going to bed and so on.
  8. You can then make a shorter learning sheet.

3) Use the cheat sheet on the day of the exam?

Ideally, your child will have a crumpled cheat sheet with them on exam day. But this can safely stay in your pocket during work or exams. Because the majority of the information is already firmly imprinted in the brain through the handwritten reproduction, the concise summary and the regular reading. In addition, also note brain games to stimulate the brain and tips to learn better vocabulary.

Cheat Day is designed to make losing weight easier: you can eat what and how much you want one day a week. Here you can find out whether cheat days make sense.

How useful is cheat day?

Whether a cheat day makes sense depends very much on how you interpret it. If you look around the internet, many a cheat day turns out to be a pure binge eating. This makes no sense for a number of reasons and can even be unhealthy.

If you want to lose weight with your diet, an extreme cheat day quickly thwarts your plans: To compensate for it, you have to stick to a strict diet the rest of the time.
According to studies, regular binge eating on cheat days can lead to disturbed eating behavior with binge eating symptoms. In a study with around 500 participants, emotional binge eating and binge eating symptoms were correlated. This means that people who often eat a lot in order to feel better are more likely to have disordered eating habits.
On cheat day, you associate tasty (but unhealthy) food with cheating and guilt. However, one study found that people are more likely to be motivated to lose weight when they associate occasional “sins” with positive feelings. Example: A piece of cake at a party is better than a piece of cake as a sin on cheat day. Of course, that doesn’t mean everyone reacts the same way – but it’s a point worth considering nonetheless.

Cheat Day: Not inherently bad

So an extreme cheat day doesn’t seem like a good idea. The actual concept of Cheat Day, not to ban any food at all, is a good idea. Diet experts think this makes sense. In Der Spiegel they recommend eating a balanced diet and treating yourself to something special every now and then – in moderation and without feelings of guilt. So you can eat healthy without getting cravings for forbidden foods.
