What is brunch?

The word “brunch” comes from English and is a cross between the terms “breakfast” (=breakfast) and “lunch” (=lunch), i.e. a meal that represents breakfast and lunch in one. Food from the breakfast area such as coffee, rolls, and eggs as well as warm lunch dishes such as pasta, meat dishes, or soups are therefore offered for brunch, mostly in the form of a cold and warm buffet. The special thing about brunch is that you can enjoy a wide range of dishes and choose the dishes according to your own taste, without sticking to a given order of the individual courses as with a served menu.

When is the brunch?

Invitation to brunch is becoming increasingly popular. A brunch starts in the morning between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. and extends into the early afternoon. The birthday party is often celebrated as a brunch since all the children of the family or friends can also take part in the party during the day.

For most, brunch is a decidedly weekend affair. Many hotels and restaurants offer their guests brunch at the weekend at a flat rate, based on the motto “all you can eat!”. Of course, brunch can be done any day of the week, but a Sunday or public holiday is a particularly good choice, as most people are free on these days, sleep in late, and have breakfast later than during the week. It is therefore the ideal meal for late risers, when it is already too late for breakfast and too early for lunch.

Planning a brunch properly

The brunch can be designed in many variations, e.g. as a garden, birthday, or theme party. Another specialty would be to offer the typical dishes of a certain country at brunch. An American brunch would be classic, if only because of the Anglo-American origin of the term. This includes foods such as fruit salad, cornflakes, pancakes, muffins, cheesecake, eggs, bacon, spare ribs, etc. According to American culture, eggs can be served in all variations, i.e. in the form of boiled eggs, fried eggs, and scrambled eggs with or without bacon.

But Italian brunch is also becoming increasingly popular. The Italian cuisine is ideal for this with breakfast elements such as rolls, jam, and cakes, but also excellent with its appetizers, pizzas, pasta dishes, and casseroles. There are also delicious Italian desserts such as tiramisu and zabaglione.

Brunch recipes

There are no specific rules for what to eat at brunch, as you can serve any hot or cold dish you like. However, since breakfast and lunchtime needs should be covered, coffee, tea, fresh fruit and vegetable juices, muesli, cornflakes, rolls, eggs, butter, sausage, cheese as well as salads, dips, soups, and hot dishes are all recommended. A delicious cake or another dessert rounds off the buffet. Many delicious brunch recipes at chefkoch.de

Calculate the cost of the brunch realistically

A brunch does not have to be expensive. Due to the variety of possible dishes, the host can choose whether to offer rather cheap food such as buns and pea soup or whether to only serve high-priced products such as caviar and steaks. Guests will love both! It is only important that the buffet contains break-first and lunch portions.
