Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee – Invented in 2016, already available at Starbucks in 2017. Like many good inventions, the Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee owes its existence to chance.

And again a new coffee creation conquers the market. The Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee is the perfect summer drink and scores with an individual taste.

A new beer pump was installed at a regular coffee shop in Oregon, USA. Since the barista working there was present, he also wanted to use this opportunity to discuss something with the owner – namely that you absolutely had to jump on the “iced coffee” train with your café. As a joke, the owner then suggested simply running the iced coffee through the new dispenser. That way you can save a lot of time. Not a bad idea at all! The barista and the owner of the café came to this conclusion and the Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee was born.

Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee vs Classic Iced Coffee

The question is, of course, what distinguishes the new type of iced coffee from the already known one. It is worth taking a look at the production and the taste of the two drinks:

Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee sounds extraordinary, if not dangerous. His little brother, the Iced Coffee, on the other hand, seems quite harmless and uninteresting. In fact, this iced coffee almost sounds like an explosive. Does the nitro come from nitroglycerin? With a little imagination you can certainly see a connection here. However, the ultimate nature is quite different and easily explained.
The thing with the nitro: The ingredient is just an abbreviation for nitrogen, which comes from the English and means nitrogen (nitrogen – for the chemists among us). The nitrogen mentioned is needed for the dispensing system, so that the drinks flow out of the tap in a nice, bubbling manner. So the Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee is not as dangerous as it sounds. The fact that this flows through a dispenser with the help of nitrogen definitely makes it one of the most extraordinary coffees of all.
Tapped – not poured out. The Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee comes directly from the tap and is thus poured into the glass in a different way than Iced Coffee. The normal iced coffee is simply served. Parallels to beer can quickly be drawn here. But more on that in the next point.
Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee tastes different than Iced Coffee. Two lines are used to bring out the incomparable taste of the Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee: One line delivers the coffee in a very conventional way, while the second comes out of the coffee, which is mixed with nitrogen. When tapping, both variants are then mixed into one drink. This also has an effect on the appearance: the nitro coffee looks almost confusingly similar to a Guinness. And in fact, both have the same taste. Anyone who has ever drunk the black beer from Dublin (Ireland) knows about its velvety-soft texture. This is exactly what the extraordinary Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee has.
You drink nitro coffee black! Unlike the Iced Coffee with its almost countless variants, the new version does not require any additional ingredients. Neither milk nor sugar goes into the glass, it just stays the way it comes out of the tap – another thing it has in common with Guinness.
To top it all off, the Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee is even good for the body because since it doesn’t contain any sugar, cream or any kind of syrup, it has hardly any calories. Just as many as unsweetened coffee has: a total of 5 kilocalories per 100 milliliters. This advantage makes the Nitro Cold Brew Iced Coffee a popular and trendy drink, especially in summer. So you don’t have to worry about the bikini figure and you can also have a glass or two more

How about a frappé as a refreshing iced coffee variation? We will show you how you can easily prepare the frothy coffee specialty yourself. Thanks to numerous possible variations, there are hardly any limits to your taste.

What does Frappe mean?

The word derives from the French verb “frapper” which means “to shake” in German. Based on the French word “lait frappé” (milkshake), the “Café frappé”, i.e. “shaken coffee”, was created.

Step 1: Mix instant coffee and water

For the classic version, put a teaspoon of instant coffee and about a teaspoon of sugar in a tall glass or bowl. Now add enough cold water to just cover the mixture.

Step 2: Beat until fluffy

Now stir the mass until foamy until about half of the glass is full. Ideally, you should use a small milk frother. Alternatively, you can shake the mixture for about a minute or froth it up with a small whisk.

Step 3: Add ice cubes

Finally, add some cold water, a dash of milk/milk alternative and a few ice cubes until the glass is completely full – done.
Important: When buying instant coffee, make sure that it contains as little oil as possible. A good guideline is no more than 1.5% fat. As a rule, the manufacturers offer instant products specially developed for frappé. If the instant coffee contains little fat and therefore little oil, small bubbles are formed when stirring, which create a stable layer of foam.

What is the difference between frappé and iced coffee?

While iced coffee is usually cooled with vanilla ice cream, a classic frappé only contains ice cubes and a dash of water. The number of calories is therefore significantly lower. In the meantime, however, there are also numerous preparation variants in which the frappé is refined with milk ice cream.

Why is a frappé preferable to an iced coffee? You not only make the healthier choice, but also the more refreshing one: By adding water instead of milk or cream ice cream, the body gets more liquid. In the Mediterranean region, the frappé is often preferred to a cappuccino.

Do you have a great thirst for coffee in summer, but would you rather cool off than a classic coffee? Then try a classic iced coffee. You can find the recipe for it here – so you don’t miss out on the delicious coffee taste even on hot days. Don’t feel like the classic? There are also numerous other iced coffee variations.

What is an iced coffee?

One thing right away: “The” iced coffee doesn’t exist. Classically, it is prepared with vanilla ice cream, cream and coffee. However, there are no limits to creativity when preparing an iced coffee. Whether frappé, milkshake, iced coffee only with ice cubes, with almond milk, caramel, brittle, cream or other extras – everything is possible.

How do you make a classic iced coffee?

Admittedly, the classic iced coffee is not exactly low in calories. But for the taste experience, it is definitely worth sinning. How to prepare the classic:

The ingredients (1 portion):

50 grams cream (possibly 1 packet vanilla sugar)
1-2 scoops of vanilla ice cream
200 ml cooled coffee (preferably stronger)

Step 1: Make coffee

Make yourself some coffee. It doesn’t matter whether you use a hand filter, Mokkamaster or a normal filter machine. Just the way you like it best. Then let it cool down well. It is best to bring the coffee to room temperature before you put it in the freezer for about an hour. If you have more time, put it in the fridge for several hours.

Step 2: Whip the cream

When the coffee has cooled, whip the cream until stiff. If you like it sweet, add a packet of vanilla sugar.

Step 3: Mix ingredients

Put the vanilla ice cream in a glass. Then pour the cold coffee over the balls. Finally, top the drink with the whipped cream. If you want, you can top them with pieces of chocolate or whatever you feel like.

The most famous variants of iced coffee

Frappé: The frappé is prepared with instant coffee and chilled milk (and/or cream) and ice cubes. In Greece in particular, it is considered the “national drink”.
Frappuccino: A frappuccino is similar to a frappé, but consists of a classic brewed espresso, milk, cream and mostly shredded ice cubes. The term is a proprietary creation of the American coffee house Starbucks and is made up of the words frappé and cappuccino.
Iced Coffee: Classically, an Iced Coffee consists only of ice-cold coffee with ice cubes. In some cases milk is added.
Affogato: With an affogato, an espresso and a scoop of vanilla ice cream meet. The creation comes from Italy, where it is often served as a dessert.
Cold brew: In contrast to conventional coffee, when preparing a cold brew, coffee powder is infused with cold water. It is then left to stand for 12 to 24 hours before the brew is filtered. As a result, the coffee has four times the caffeine content of regular coffee. It is served with ice cubes and is usually drunk black or with a dash of milk.

Are you looking for the perfect summer drink? Then you should try this ginger elderflower lemon ice tea with honey. The alcohol-free refreshment tastes delicious and is really healthy. Here is the recipe.

Recipe: Ginger-lemon iced tea with honey and elderflower

You need this for one liter of iced tea
A thumb-sized piece of ginger
Three to four tablespoons of elderflower syrup*
A tablespoon of honey
juice of a lemon
It’s that easy
Wash ginger and cut into thin slices
Pour a liter of boiling water over it and let it steep for at least 10 minutes
Add elderflower syrup, honey and lemon juice
Remove pieces of ginger, stir, allow to cool, add ice cubes and enjoy
A few more tips
You can peel the ginger, but you don’t have to – just wash it
The longer you let the ginger steep, the more intense or spicier the tea will be
If the iced tea tastes too sweet according to the recipe, simply reduce the amount of syrup and honey accordingly

By the way: You can easily grow ginger in a pot or in the garden yourself. Cut a thumb-sized piece with a “bud” off a ginger root, soak it in water overnight, and plant it the next day, about an inch deep. Water regularly and after just a few months you will have your own ginger plant at home, whose bulb you can harvest and eat as soon as the leaves turn brown. I’ve tried it myself, it works – even if the tuber harvested was admittedly not very large.

So much for cold coffee – iced coffee is a classic that makes a comeback every summer. As Caffè freddo, it is traditionally served in Italy as an often sweetened espresso lengthened with ice-cold water, as a café frappé in Greece and in Cyprus as cold frothed coffee with pieces of ice. And even if people like to use ready-mixed powder bags these days – a home-made iced coffee is a pleasure that is well worth the little effort!

Our favorite iced coffee: Nutella iced coffee

Similar, but alcohol-free and a bit sweeter, is “Nutella Iced Coffee”. Here the glass is first garnished with chocolate and caramel sauce, then cold coffee or espresso (depending on your taste) is filled with vanilla ice cream. Then stir in a spoonful of Nutella, decorate with cream and grated chocolate and enjoy.

Viennese Iced Coffee & Co

The variation of the frozen cappuccino is also enjoying increasing popularity. To prepare it, you need a blender with a cup of espresso, about three quarters of a cup of milk, a teaspoon of brown sugar and 60 grams of ice cubes. After mixing the ingredients, let stand briefly and then pour into a glass. Of course you can also use sugar syrup instead of cane sugar here or use other syrup variations as you like. Another specialty is Viennese iced coffee. Here the vanilla ice cream is poured directly into the still warm coffee, then milk and sugar are added and the whole thing is carefully stirred. This sweet mixture then goes into the freezer for two hours. Before serving, briefly whip the melange again and serve with a little cream if desired. For a fruity variation on cold coffee, take two tablespoons of freshly brewed or instant coffee, stir in a tablespoon of sugar and allow the drink to cool. Add 100 milliliters of orange juice and the coffee to about 250 grams of whipped cream. Mix well and add 320 grams of vanilla ice cream, finish with coffee beans and, if desired, additional whipped cream. If you prefer something stronger, you can take a chilled double espresso as the basis and refine it with one or two scoops of ice cream and some frothed milk.
