Admittedly, Matcha Latte with its green color takes a little getting used to. But the green tea drink is not only healthy but also delicious and very popular with celebrities. We reveal how you can make Matcha Latte yourself.

Matcha was originally prepared by Buddhist monks, later it became the favorite drink of the samurai and then an integral part of the Japanese tea ceremony – even today.

With us, the ground green tea from the delicate leaf tips of Tencha tea has become more and more popular and well-known in recent years. Last but not least, Hollywood celebrities strolled through the streets with a matcha latte and were photographed by the paparazzi.

Of course, matcha tea can also be drunk pure, i.e. only infused with water, but it becomes an in-drink and coffee substitute with milk. The drink is then called Matcha Latte and is super easy to prepare. Health-conscious people, people with lactose intolerance, and vegans use soy milk. However, it also works with cow’s milk.

Make Matcha Latte yourself: This is how it works

  • ½ tsp matcha powder
  • 50ml hot water
  • 200 ml frothed soy milk

Put the matcha in a small bowl and stir in 50 ml of hot water. It gets lump-free with a matcha whisk. Pour liquid into a glass or mug and then add frothed soy or cow’s milk. If necessary, sweeten the Matcha Latte with honey or agave syrup (vegan). You can find more great Matcha recipes such as waffles with Matcha filling or tiramisu with Matcha here

Matcha is healthy

A bowl of Matcha contains about 3% caffeine. However, the drink does not make you jittery or nervous, but the green tea powder has a pleasantly invigorating effect.

Matcha is also said to have an anti-inflammatory effect and strengthen the immune system. You can find out everything you need to know about matcha and why it is so healthy in our product information about matcha.

Matcha: An expensive affair

Matcha powder can be bought in tea shops or health food stores. However, it is not cheap due to its complex production. Apart from growing and picking, it takes about an hour to get around 30g of matcha powder from tencha tea. Therefore, you pay at least 15 euros for a small can (30 g). Be careful with cheaper products. It is not uncommon for this not to be real matcha. Store Matcha in an airtight container and protected it from light. The Japanese also like to keep their matcha in the fridge after opening.

Turmeric Latte is the latest craze. The sun-yellow hot drink, also known as golden milk, is said to wake you up, strengthen your immune system and curb your appetite – all thanks to the power of the turmeric root.

While turmeric has been used as a natural remedy in the tradition of Ayurveda for centuries, the yellow spice was previously known in European latitudes as the main ingredient in curry powder. With the invention of the turmeric latte, the sun-yellow powder could now also start its triumphal march at the coffee bar, because turmeric is considered an all-around healthy, sustainable pick-me-up. The hot drink with turmeric and ginger has long been known as “golden milk” to yogis.

According to a study by the University of Michigan, the plant substance curcumin, which is responsible for the intensive color of the spice, strengthens the cell membranes and thus increases their resistance to diseases. In addition, turmeric is said to relieve stomach problems and promote blood circulation – these properties have not yet been scientifically proven.

In Ayurveda, turmeric is one of the “hot spices”. It is credited with having an internally cleansing, healing, detoxifying, and blood-purifying effect. The complexion is also said to improve with the yellow spice.

Turmeric Latte: Is The Drink Really Healthy?

On paper, the positive effects of an afternoon turmeric latte sound excellent – but can the drink also keep up with coffee in terms of taste and stimulating effect?

To find out, we in the EAT SMARTER editorial team brewed our own turmeric latte.

The basic recipe for a turmeric latte

Take a cup of milk, a teaspoon of turmeric powder, half a teaspoon of grated ginger, a pinch of pepper, and a teaspoon of honey, heat all the ingredients in a saucepan, and let them steep for ten minutes.

We topped the sun-yellow milk mixture with some milk froth for a café latte-like look. The turmeric latte can also be prepared vegan: Soy or almond milk is a good milk substitute here. If you like it more exotic, you can also use coconut milk. Instead of honey, the vegan turmeric latte is sweetened with agave syrup.

The taste test: how does turmeric latte taste?

While turmeric stands out in savory dishes for its color rather than its aroma, the spice is clearly the driving force behind the turmeric latte. The drink tastes sweet and spicy at first, then the tart, slightly bitter turmeric aroma comes along – not unpleasant, but takes a little getting used to. Milk and ginger go surprisingly well together.

Our conclusion: Unusual, but good! Even the appetite for sweets was limited after a cup of turmeric latte. With a nutritional value of 120 kcal per cup, a honey-sweetened turmeric latte is a great alternative for the morning or afternoon. Its sunny yellow color also helps to cheer up the mood on cloudy days.

We’ve just gotten used to the green Matcha Latte when the next trend hits us: the Smurf Latte. The Matcha Mylkbar in Melbourne has been offering the vegan and blue (!) drink for a few weeks now and the Australians are crazy about the Smurf latte!

We see blue

We’re seeing blue more and more often on Pinterest and Instagram: the smurf latte – which translates as “smurf latte” – is the latest vegan trend from Australia. The hip Matcha Mylkbar in Melbourne, which also offers unusual creations such as beetroot latte or turmeric latte, has been selling the blue sister of the matcha latte for the equivalent of around six euros for a few weeks – and everyone wants to try it!

The blue secret

No wonder, because the unusual color also makes you curious about what’s behind the hip drink. We did some research: The Smurf Latte gets its blue color from the powder of the spirulina algae (e.g. available here).

In addition to the blue algae powder, the Smurf Latte consists of coconut milk, lemon, ginger, and agave. It should taste sweet and sour and smell like blue algae. It may sound like it takes some getting used to at first, but the previous testers seem enthusiastic!

That is why algae are healthy

Spirulina belongs to the genus of blue-green algae and is currently being hailed as a superfood. In fact, the algae are very nutritious and healthy. It contains 70 percent protein and all the essential amino acids. This makes Spirulina a good dietary supplement for vegans and vegetarians. In addition, algae provide valuable antioxidants that protect our cells.

In addition to minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, blue algae contain numerous vitamins. Spirulina is available in powder, capsule, or tablet form at health food stores, organic supermarkets, or over the internet.

In any case, we have become curious and hope that we will soon be able to try the blue Schlumpf Latte in Germany’s hip cafés and coffee bars!

Coffee has been reviving Europeans since the 16th century. The simple filter coffee is still very popular, but has faced stiff competition in recent years. We now know that coffee has other advantages in addition to its invigorating effect: It is a luxury food that can be used to conjure up all sorts of things. With a little culinary imagination, the “coffee” quickly becomes a real treat.
A few years ago, hardly anyone knew what a barista does. Today it is known that the coffee bar is a specialist who conjures up real works of art from ever-changing coffee ideas. But what are the latest coffee creations at the coffee bar?

Clearly, the main trend in recent years has been with the classics: espresso, latte macchiato and cappuccino. That won’t change any time soon either. But the popular trio can still be varied individually and expanded into other interesting specialties.

A Mocca Macchiato is based on creamy chocolate. This is followed by hot milk and strong espresso. Milk froth sits enthroned on top – a sweet and hot pleasure with a special taste. The white variant – “Chocolat Blanc” – is based on the addition of white chocolate, which is first melted in a water bath and then mixed with the coffee. White chocolate shavings come on top as decoration.

The vanilla latte is becoming increasingly popular. Frothed milk is poured over a cup of espresso and a dash of vanilla syrup is added.

The Latte Macchiato Frio is ideal for hot summer days. A cup of cold espresso is poured into a tall glass together with chilled milk, crushed ice and a good dash of aromatic maple syrup. Another espresso is added on top – this ensures a more intense taste and optical pleasure thanks to the great layering.

Simple cappuccino gets a very special touch through the addition of spices. Cinnamon and cinnamon syrup give a fine aroma, ginger and cardamom also provide a touch of fragrant exoticism.

You should start with the pumpkin syrup, as this should cool down after preparation.

Ingredients syrup

250 ml of water, 200 g of sugar, 1 tl cinnamon, 1/2 tl ground cloves, 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg, 50 g of pumpkin puree

Preparation syrup

Heat the water and the sugar in a small saucepan at medium temperature and stir until the sugar is dissolved.
Then add the pumpkin puree and spices and let it simmer for about 5 minutes so that the syrup becomes slightly viscous.
Let the syrup cool and sift through so that no larger pieces of spices and pumpkin are contained.
Now we come to the actual preparation of the pumpkin spice latte.

Ingredients for pumpkin spice latte

1 espresso, 30 g syrup, 250 ml of foamed milk, spray cream (if necessary), cinnamon powder

Preparation of pumpkin-spice latte

Break the espresso as normal.
Foam the milk or just heat up.
Put the milk in a large cup filled with the espresso and add the syrup.
Mix everything well, apply spray cream with as a hood if desired and refine with cinnamon.

It is now well known that the preparation of coffee, cappuccino, espresso or latte macchiato can be an art. However, the work of a barista is not only to achieve a balanced mix of coffee and process it, but above all in the visual design of the different coffee specialties. After all, a cappuccino should not only address taste and smell. Elaborate decorations of the milk foam layer represent an art in itself – the so -called “latte art”. With the help of the “current” by pouring the milk and the milk foam correctly, patterns and images are created on the surface of the drink. Special pens, chocolate syrup or stencils sometimes serve as aids for design. There are no limits to creativity: from the “simple” heart to clover leaves, stars or angels – almost everything can be shown on the foam by the baristas. International competitions challenge the coffee artists to produce ever more complex images.

However, in order to produce the structure of milk, milk foam and espresso, you need the right accessories – and a lot of practice. Because as simple as it may look, even the supposedly simple figures, such as the heart, represent a challenge. The equipment of a milk foam artist consists of an espresso machine or jug, a milk frother and, last but not least, a milk jug and cappuccino cups. The latter should not have a diameter that is not too small so that the patterns can have a larger area. The milk jug should also be big enough. The ideal size is between 0.6 and 1 liter of volume. The larger the jug, the easier the foam succeeds. The basis for the preparation is the espresso, which in the best case has a dense crema. This ensures that the espresso stays hot longer and is also an important flavor carrier.

On the other hand, the spirits differ from the preparation of the milk foam: while they prefer a fresh whole milk, others swear by H or condensed milk. In principle, however, the following applies: A creamy, dense, not too solid consistency of the milk foam. The milk jug should be filled up to half at most, since the foaming of the volume of the milk increases by twice. The milk frother of an espresso machine is best suited. After draining the condensed water, the technology of the so -called “pulling”, in which the air is pulled under the milk surface and the subsequent “roll”. Here, the air is evenly distributed in the milk and “undermined”. The subsequent swiveling of the milk foam in the jug improves the creaminess again. In addition to the nature of the foam, the rapid pouring out after the foam is important, since otherwise milk and foam can separate. The milk foam should get under the crema of the espresso when watering in order to achieve the desired effect. Because the right vertebrae when the milk occurs into the coffee creates the characteristic patterns. The jug should therefore be attached on the edge of the cup if possible and the milk should be poured into a place in front of the center of the cup. The evenly moving back and forth of the milk jug is created, the leaf or “tree”- a popular figure and quickly learned for beginners.

The perfect recipe for a Matcha latte

A enjoyable Matcha latte is in no way inferior to a latte macchiato. Of course, the tastes differ, but in terms of quality, a good alternative is offered here. A Matcha latte is prepared quite quickly and easily. We explain how.

The ingredients and materials:
½ TL Matcha powder
150 ml of water
150 ml plant milk (soy milk, almond milk or oat milk is often used here)
Kettle or pot
Milk frother/whisk
Heat -resistant glass or another container
We will give you a precise approach for the preparation. Of course, you can of course also vary with the quantities of the recipe so that you can create your personal favorite taste.

Step-by-step instructions:
At the beginning you have to heat the water to approx. 80 degrees Celsius. A simple kettle or a saucepan is sufficient for this.
Put the Matcha powder in any container and stir the powder with two tablespoons of cold water. This means that the flavors can dissolve better.
Next, take your plant milk (by the way: vegan and naturally lactose -free) and warm them up.
Now the Matcha powder is mixed with the hot water, with most Matcha lattes containing more milk than water. Here you should definitely experiment a little around here.

This is how the green tea Matcha acts on our body

The Matcha tea differs from conventional tea primarily thanks to its special combination of ingredients. First of all, tea and caffeine stands out. The two equivalent substances get the body cycle going and increase the ability to concentrate. The mood increases automatically and you get into a guards and active state.

In addition to tea, theanin is also included in the Matcha latte. This rare amino acid occurs in high doses and increases, the reaction and absorption capacity. Through strokes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases inhibits-a real miracle cure inhibits theater. Of course, proteins should not be missing either. These donate strength and fill up the energy balance. This not only strengthens the immune system, but also the metabolism.

With an ingredient, the trend drink also gives itself a decisive advantage over a coffee specialty. Even if both drinks have an exposure to the caffeine, the encouraging effect in the Matcha continues significantly longer. This owes the drink primarily to the so -called tannin. This binds to the tea and mitigates and delays its effect. So the agitator effect does not hit too unexpectedly and lasts longer. After consuming a Matcha latt, you therefore feel concentrated and awake for a long time without needing supplies after a short time. The tannin also calms the gastrointestinal tract and prevents infections.

In addition to all these surprising ingredients, the Matcha tea can also come up with calcium, iron and potassium. These fabrics strengthen bone construction and cardiovascular system, support oxygen transport, cell functions and energy metabolism and provide trace elements for muscle and nerve functions.

However, the list of health highlights still does not stop here. There are also many vitamins in the Matcha latte – vitamin B1, vitamin C, carotene and vitamin B2. These also supply our body with new energy. Finally, the bitter substances of the matcha should be called, the catechin. These make up around 40 % of the dried leaves and protect against pathogens.

The alternative to coffee

The question of why Matcha Latte is a good alternative is answered very differently. First of all, this is of course a tasteful tea drink – vegan, lactose -free and super enjoyable. So if you don’t like coffee, you have a great alternative solution on your hand. Furthermore, the stimulating effect would of course be called. With an espresso, it occurs very suddenly and disappears again after a short time. Matcha tea convinces with a lighter effect that also appears less aggressively. Conveniently, the caffeine effect lasts for tea much longer. The Matcha Latte enjoys a better reputation as a guard. Of course, Matcha also includes many healthy ingredients as green tea – here, too, the coffee cannot quite keep up.

Matcha latte: enliven health

If you have enough of coffee or just want to try something else, this drink is well served. The green tea with milk foam topping not only looks healthy, but is also. In terms of taste, it convinces across the board and can hand the water to his competitor, the latte macchiato. With the Matcha latte, you rely on more vitality and a great taste experience.

The latte macchiato has been an absolute favorite drink for years. It has a mild taste and consists largely of milk. The accompanying espresso provides the necessary coffee nuance and a fine aroma. In the following post we show the perfect preparation method.

What is a latte macchiato?

Along with cappuccino, latte macchiato is one of the most popular coffee specialties worldwide. The beverage originally came from Italy. Here it was traditionally made for children and young people because it has a low coffee and caffeine content. The individual layers of the drink consist of warm milk, espresso and milk froth. A typical latte macchiato with whole milk weighs in at almost 130 calories and 25-30 mg of caffeine.

Origin and history of “spotted milk”

Unfortunately, it is not known when and by whom latte macchiato was invented. However, it has its origins in Italy. In contrast to conventional coffees, this variation should have the lowest possible caffeine content of 25-30 mg caffeine. A typical 200 ml cup of filter coffee has 64-96 mg of caffeine in comparison. The aim was to gradually introduce children and young people to the taste of coffee without giving them an unhealthy amount of caffeine for their age. Incidentally, latte macchiato means “spotted milk”, which is an allusion to its composition. This consists of three superimposed layers. Warm milk is in the lower third, espresso in the middle and milk froth in the upper part.

Difference to cappuccino

Latte macchiato and cappuccino have the same ingredients: espresso and milk (alternative). The difference lies in the preparation. While the cappuccino only contains milk froth, the milk separates from the latte macchiato.

How do you prepare a latte macchiato?

The original Italian recipe for a latte macchiato is quite simple and consists of hot milk and espresso. The preparation looks very uncomplicated: the coffee is quickly poured over the milk. The classic three layers, as we know it in this country, are not used with this method.

To enjoy a latte macchiato with layers, the preparation is a little more difficult than the basic Italian recipe. For the perfect enjoyment, it is recommended to follow the following three steps.

Ingredients needed for a latte macchiato:

An espresso
200 ml milk (alternative)

Step 1:

Froth approx. 200 ml of milk to create a creamy and firm milk froth. This should be firmer than a cappuccino, so froth the milk or milk alternative a little longer.

Step 2:

Slowly pour the frothed milk into a tall, narrow glass. Set the glass aside to allow the foam and milk to separate.

Step 3:

Carefully pour 25-30ml of espresso into the glass. The espresso can easily be poured into the milk using a small jug in order to achieve an optimal layer formation.
Good to know: With an espresso maker you do not prepare espresso, but a strong coffee. This can still be used for the preparation.
When pouring the espresso, remember to pour it slowly in the middle or on the side of the glass. As a result, the coffee should separate the milk from the milk foam and be placed exactly in the middle between the two components. This is how the well-known three layers of latte macchiato are created: milk below, espresso in the middle and milk foam on top.

Why do the three layers mix?

If the layers mix with each other, this can have two reasons:
There is a possibility that the milk has not been properly frothed and the froth lacks firmness.
On the other hand, pouring the espresso too quickly or imprecisely can lead to the milk and coffee being mixed together.

Cozy afternoons can be perfectly enjoyed with a Pumpkin Spice Latte. We explain why pumpkin coffee is so popular, where it comes from and how you can easily make it yourself.

What is a Pumpkin Spice Latte?

A Pumpkin Spice Latte is a coffee variation that is essentially made with espresso or strong coffee, pumpkin puree, spices and milk froth. Depending on the season, mainly autumnal spices such as cinnamon or cloves are used.

The drink was made famous by the American coffee chain Starbucks, which offers the drink in its branches every year around Halloween. The first Pumpkin Spice Latte went over the counter in January 2003. At that time, the company tried to extend the Christmas season with the drink by launching a hot drink with Christmas spices.

Since the drink was very well received by customers, but the pumpkin season generally begins in autumn, the decision was subsequently made to sell the pumpkin coffee in the branches as early as September. Since then, the Pumpkin Spice Latte has developed into a real cult drink that is so popular that Starbucks was already offering the drink in selected branches in mid-August.

This is how the Pumpkin Spice Latte works

If you are looking for a pumpkin and coffee recipe to take home, you’ve come to the right place. The recipe is quite simple, but requires some preparation if you want to make all the ingredients yourself.

List of ingredients for about 0.4 l Pumpkin Spice Latte:

1-2 tbsp fine pumpkin puree
1 tsp Pumpkin Spice spice mix
2 tbsp agave syrup
Milk/milk alternative for milk froth
espresso
Options:
Coffee syrup for refining or sweetening, such as vanilla or caramel

Step 1: Prepare the pumpkin puree

In the USA you can get the ready-made pumpkin puree in almost every supermarket. In Germany you can occasionally find the puree at the weekly market or in some delicatessens. You can also easily prepare pumpkin puree yourself in just three steps:
cut pumpkin
Cut a Hokkaido pumpkin into four equal parts and remove the seeds.
Cook Pumpkin
Put the pieces, including the peel, in boiling water and leave them there for around 15 to 20 minutes.
puree
Using a hand blender, mash the soft pumpkin pieces into a puree.
Storage Tip: You’ll probably need a lot less puree than you get from a whole squash. But that doesn’t matter. If you pack the puree airtight, it will keep in the fridge for about a week for further processing. Of course, you can also plan ahead and store the finished puree in the freezer.

Step 2: Preparation of the spice mixture

The listed ingredients for our pumpkin recipe can be found in almost every supermarket or easily ordered online. You can also make the spice mixture yourself and create your own individual taste. Depending on your preference, you can change the proportion accordingly. To make it, simply mix the following ground ingredients together:
3 tbsp cinnamon
2 tsp ginger
2 tsp nutmeg
1.5 tsp allspice
1 tsp cloves

Step 3: Prepare Pumpkin Spice Latte

Now the ingredients for the pumpkin coffee can finally be mixed together:
Pour pumpkin puree into a glass
Prepare a large glass and fill it with 1-2 tablespoons of fine pumpkin puree. To get it particularly fine, you can scrape it through a sieve into the glass again.
mix ingredients
Take a small bowl and mix 1 teaspoon of the spice mixture with the 2 tablespoons of agave syrup. Then spread the mixture over the pumpkin puree.
Add milk froth
In the next step you need milk foam. You can open it yourself or get it quickly and easily from a fully automatic coffee machine. Then add the milk froth to the glass.
Add espresso
Now it is important to make a particularly strong espresso. This is only possible with the help of a fully automatic machine or portafilter. A strong coffee can be made with an espresso maker, for example. Now pour the espresso into the glass very slowly so that the individual layers do not mix with each other. This creates a great visual effect when serving.
Stir
The Pumpkin Spice Latte is ready and ready to be enjoyed. Just before drinking, you should stir the drink well with a long-handled spoon so that all the ingredients mix together and the typical pumpkin taste can unfold.
Optional: Add syrup and cream
If you would like to refine your pumpkin coffee, you can optionally add cream to the PSL as a topping or add coffee syrup instead of agave syrup.

Vegan Pumpkin Coffee

For the vegan variant of the Pumpkin Spice Latte, you can also easily become a milk alternative. Soy milk or oat milk are best suited for frothing. Rice, coconut, almond or spelled milk are less suitable. After all, the milk froth is an essential part of the pumpkin latte. But in the end it’s a matter of taste.

Pumpkin Spice Latte without coffee – the version for children

For people who don’t want to drink coffee, malt coffee is an alternative preparation option. It’s actually not real coffee, since it’s made from grain, but the taste is similar and the pumpkin malt coffee is also very tasty. So that it doesn’t get too sweet, you can also do without the agave syrup and use honey instead.

How many calories does a Pumpkin Spice Latte have?

You may have guessed it: Starbucks finished PSL is anything but a diet drink. A 12 ounce Tall cup contains approximately 300 calories. The calories of the Pumpkin Spice Latte are divided into about 10 g of fat and 40 g of sugar, which corresponds to about 10 sugar cubes. This increases the daily energy requirement. If you prepare the coffee with pumpkin puree at home, you can of course control the addition of sugar and fat. This delicious and homemade alternative is not quite as impressive. A glass (250 ml) with fine puree and 1.5% milk has approx. 135 Kcal.
