While we eat apples all year round, autumn time is clearly also pear time. The fruit is now in season and tastes great either on its own or as an ingredient in savory or sweet dishes. We give you 6 reasons why you should definitely eat pears now.

1. Pears are high in fiber

Pears are among the most fiber-rich fruits. A medium-sized fruit contains about 6 grams of fiber. We should consume around 25 to 30 grams of fiber every day. Eating a pear every day, therefore, makes an important contribution to achieving this goal. Dietary fiber is important for digestion and also keeps you full for longer.

2. Pears are rich in vitamins

Pears contain a lot of vitamins that you can use in the autumn and winter time. It is not uncommon for people to catch a cold or the flu during this time. Not only vitamins A and C and various B vitamins are contained in pears, but the fruit also scores with minerals such as sulfur, copper, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and phosphorus.

3. Pears are easy to digest

Pears contain only about one to three grams of fruit acid per liter, so they taste sweeter than apples and are therefore among the most easily digestible types of fruit. Due to their stomach-friendliness, they are particularly suitable for children and babies, but also for sick or elderly people.

4. Pears are low in fat

Although there are lower-calorie types of fruit, pears are very low in fat. The fruits bring it to just half a gram of fat per 100 grams.

5. Pears contain Potassium & Calcium

Apples are often compared to pears. When it comes to the calorie balance, apples perform better, because a medium-sized apple has about 68 calories, while a pear has about 73 calories, but the autumn fruit scores points in terms of minerals. In addition to the minerals mentioned above, pears also have plenty of potassium and calcium. They therefore particularly stimulate the metabolism and have a purifying and draining effect.

6. Pears are rich in boron

Pears also contain the important and mostly neglected mineral boron. This is relevant for the body to store calcium. Calcium is particularly important for bone formation.

Growing garlic yourself is very easy: separate the cloves, stick them in the ground and watch the garlic thrive. As soon as the green shoots turn brown, the garlic bulb is ready to be harvested. Read here why autumn is the best planting time and what you should consider for a rich garlic harvest.

Growing garlic is also great for people without a green thumb because the tuber is undemanding and can survive frost.

The best time to grow the white tuber is autumn. In this way, the tuber can grow over the spring and autumn and develop better than if cultivation were only started at the classic planting time in May. The cold of winter does not damage the seedlings but actually promotes their growth.

To plant garlic yourself, you do not need special plant garlic. The only important thing is that the tuber comes from the region in which you live because garlic from China or the Mediterranean region is used to higher temperatures and thrives much worse than the more robust bulbs from colder areas.

How to plant the garlic bulb

Garlic naturally thrives best in a bed. Make grooves about four centimeters deep and put a clove of garlic in each about ten centimeters apart (transverse distance to the next groove 20 centimeters). Cover loosely with soil and water. In spring, the green garlic begins to sprout, later the plant bears a decorative flower.

In these inflorescences sit small bulbs, not unlike a clove of garlic. They can also be sown, but they don’t produce as good a yield as garlic cloves. It is recommended to pinch off the flowers so that the plant puts all its energy into developing the tuber.

As soon as the green wilts, the garlic bulb is ready to be harvested: pull it out of the ground and let it dry in a dry, airy place. You can either use the cloves in the kitchen or replant them.

Garlic also thrives on the balcony. It is vital to choose a sufficiently large planter, for example, a wooden or plastic box. You can get them in any supermarket for little money. Before you fill the container with soil, provide the bottom with a few drainage holes so that the moisture cannot accumulate. Garlic plants prefer sunny, sheltered locations.

Forget pajamas and underwear – sleeping naked is far healthier, preventing disease and even mobilizing fatty tissue. An expert recommends women in particular to sleep better naked.

Expert advises: women should better sleep naked – for this reason

Since the tight-fitting underwear restricts the ventilation of the intimate area, women in particular should sleep without panties at night. In addition to hormonal changes, very frequent washing or inadequate toilet hygiene, tight underwear, which is worn primarily at night, can trigger symptoms of illness in the vaginal area.

According to the Dutch gynecologist Alyssa Dweck, women in particular, who are more likely to have infections in the genital area, are recommended not to wear underwear at night. The fresh air makes it harder for fungi to multiply and thus prevents infections.

However, if you sleep naked, you have to change the bed linen more often. Bacteria are transmitted significantly more from bare skin than from pajama fabrics and underwear. That is why it is recommended to change the bed linen once a week so that the bacteria do not multiply so quickly.

Heat can cause diseases such as fungal infections

Yeast fungi are known to multiply with heat and moisture. The female intimate area can thus provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria to spread. Especially if you wear tight trousers and underwear not only during the day but also at night, the intimate area gets almost no air.

Three out of four women will have a vaginal yeast infection at least once in their lives. In some cases, the disease keeps coming back. 90 percent of a fungal infection of the vulva and vagina is caused by the yeast Candida albicans, in rarer cases it is other types of Candida. These symptoms of an infection in the genital area can be mild to severe:
Mild to severe itching inside and outside the vagina
Burn
Redness and swelling of the vagina and labia
The feeling of being sore
Yellowish white discharge
Small injuries in the intimate area
pain during sexual intercourse
Burning when urinating, as the urethra can also be affected

Don’t want to sleep naked? You should note that

Many people feel uncomfortable sleeping naked or freeze easily. Under these circumstances, the gynecologist recommends loose sleeping clothes such as loose nightgowns or cotton pants that are particularly airy. Nevertheless, the more naked the better. However, if you freeze at night, you should not wear thick socks, but rather grab a hot water bottle*. It cools down over time and can be kicked out of bed more easily if it gets too warm.

More tips:
Loose boxer shorts instead of briefs, it is better to wear loose boxer shorts
Loose instead of tight clothes
Don’t wear underwear underneath your pajama bottoms
Swap underwear for a thicker blanket
Avoid sleepwear made of polyester or other synthetic fabrics
Prefer cotton or silk sleepwear
Conclusion: Sleeping naked can be very pleasant, especially in warm months. If you’re cold, you can always get a second blanket. Definitely worth skipping pajamas for. Not only will this benefit your health, it may also lead to more fun in the bedroom!

Pets can get diarrhea too. If this happens, it is important to act correctly so that the dog and cat get better as quickly as possible.

How to recognize and treat diarrhea

Basically, a distinction is made between two different types of diarrhea:
Colonic diarrhea: You can recognize diarrhea by the fact that your cat or dog has very frequent bowel movements. A smaller amount of faeces than usual is produced, and it is not uncommon for mucus and/or blood to be mixed in. Your pet may seem to be constantly straining as swelling around the anus makes them feel like they need to defecate constantly. The swelling often shows up as redness.
Diarrhea in the small intestine: In contrast to diarrhea in the large intestine, your animal does not usually have to defecate much more often than usual. Common symptoms include a growl in the abdomen, gas, and very loose and sluggish stools.

It doesn’t matter what type of diarrhea it is: You can take action against acute diarrhea. One option is to choose a dietary supplement: this thickens the stool and allows harmful substances to be removed. Due to the disturbed intestinal function, the dog or cat usually consumes fewer nutrients, which also speaks in favor of using a dietary supplement. Make sure you use the product correctly and read the package leaflet beforehand.

Be sure to give your dog or cat enough to drink: Due to the frequent bowel movements, he or she loses more liquid than usual. Accordingly, the fluid intake should also be increased. This is the only way to prevent the animal from drying out. The right diet is also particularly important: the intestine loses many nutrients, which is why it is advisable to give the animal smaller amounts of easily digestible food several times a day. A tip, for example, can be the so-called Moro’sche carrot soup: You boil half a kilo of peeled carrots in twice the amount of water for at least 90 minutes and then puree everything into a homogeneous soup. You fill up the soup with hot water to the amount of one liter and add 3 grams of salt.

You should definitely see a veterinarian if the diarrhea persists despite these measures, your pet has other symptoms, or stops eating. Do not hesitate to consult a doctor if the animal is suddenly aggressive, screams when defecation, the diarrhea shows traces of blood or the animal withdraws very strongly. The veterinarian can quickly clarify the cause and thus eliminate uncertainties. In special cases, he*she can also set an infusion and carry out other examinations, such as an X-ray or an ultrasound. This will prevent the animal from emerging from the disease very weak.

Possible causes of diarrhea

The cause of diarrhea in our favorite pets is usually in the small or large intestine. If there is diarrhea in the small intestine, infections caused by worms, bacteria or viruses can be the main reason for the diarrhoea. Another likely cause is intestinal irritation, which may be due to a change in diet or improper diet. Maybe your dog or cat just ate something on the street that wasn’t good for him/her.

If you think it could be due to worms, you should definitely consult a veterinarian: They can examine a sample of your pet’s stool and, after confirming the suspicion, can then professionally deworm the animal. Young animals in particular often have to struggle with worms; you can usually recognize the worm infestation by a bloated stomach (also called “worm belly”). Many vets will also advise you on alternative treatment regimens, such as a dewormer.

Viruses are also a common cause, so remember to have your dog or cat vaccinated against the most common viruses. However, some viruses cannot be vaccinated against: In this case, it is important that you actively try to fight your pet’s diarrhea yourself.

However, if there are other symptoms, in rare cases it can also be an indication of a more serious illness, such as pancreatitis: do not hesitate to ask a specialist for advice.

Wrongly fueled the car – this has happened to many. This mistake can have expensive consequences. What to do now to avoid the worst.

Do this if you misfuel

The engine jerks and makes strange noises when driving? The engine warning light comes on or flashes? These can be signs that you have misfuelled. In such cases, switch off the engine and ignition immediately and notify your workshop or a towing service. Because in the worst case, incorrect refueling can lead to an engine defect and thus to a total loss. It often leads to damage to injectors, filters, fuel lines and pumps.

In order to avoid this fatal damage, it is best to act as early as possible. As soon as you realize you are filling up with the wrong fuel, stop filling the tank immediately. Never turn on the ignition or the engine. In the operating instructions you can read what needs to be done now.

How to intervene depends on which vehicle you drive and what fuel was used. If you’ve run diesel into a petrol engine, you might get lucky. In most cases the tank can be pumped out. Depending on the engine and the amount of wrong fuel, it is also possible to drive on slowly and gradually top up with the correct fuel. Nevertheless, damage to the vehicle can occur.

High costs when there is petrol in the diesel

The situation is different if you have filled up with petrol instead of diesel. If the engine has already been put into operation after incorrect fueling, repairs can cost several thousand euros. Total damage to the pump often occurs. Drivers of older diesel cars may be able to get away with it, a small amount of petrol usually does not harm these vehicles. If you haven’t started the engine yet, pumping it out can help.

Of course it can also happen that you make a mistake within the types of petrol. For example, if you fill up with Super E10 instead of E5, you can fill up the rest of the tank with Super Plus if you only have a small amount. This fuel is particularly low in ethanol, so that a harmless mixture can be prepared initially. But it can also be the case here that the fuel has to be pumped out.

If you don’t notice the mistake in time, it can get quite expensive. The towing service alone costs at least 120 euros. In addition, pumping out and rinsing out the fuel system costs about 150 to 200 euros. If vehicle parts have to be replaced, this can even cost up to 3000 euros. Neither the liability insurance nor the partially or fully comprehensive insurance will pay for your faux pas. You can only get the costs reimbursed if you have a motor vehicle protection letter.

If the LED lamp flickers, this can have a variety of causes. You don’t need an electrician for everything. This is how you fix the flickering of your lamp yourself.

These are the advantages of LEDs

Saving energy – that’s what LED lamps stand for with their name. An LED can shine for up to 50,000 hours. Depending on the output, the incandescent lamp only lasts around 1000 hours. After the initial shortcomings that the LED was not bright enough and also needed a high electrical output, LED lamps are currently difficult to beat in terms of efficiency.

To be precise, the history of the LEDs we know today begins as early as 1907. It was here that the Englishman Henry Joseph Round made a discovery that had long-term consequences: non-organic substances can glow under electrical voltage. LEDs now shine in the brightest colors – economical and environmentally friendly. They are durable, robust, do not contain any pollutants, do not get too hot and can sometimes be flexibly adjusted in brightness.

A true marvel, one might think. But even the LED lamp does not always work as it should. One or the other will have experienced it before: an LED lamp that flickers. There is nothing more annoying. The good news is that this is usually easy to fix. Flickering often occurs when you switch your lamps to LEDs. To make a diagnosis, you can observe your LED: Is the flickering regular or irregular? Does it flicker all the time or only when you turn it on?

Causes and solutions against flickering

If your lamp flickers regularly, your old halogen transformer may not be suitable for LEDs. In this case you have to replace the transformer. The problem may also lie with the lamp’s capacitor, which stores the electrical voltage. Therefore, buy high-quality LEDs. Test symbols such as EMC, ENEC and GS are used for orientation. However, it often helps to unscrew and screw the lamp back in to restore contact between the lamp and the socket.

The LED only flickers when switched on or when the lamp is dimmed? This is also not surprising in the case of LEDs with inferior electronics. However, it is also possible that your lamp is not designed for the dimming function or vice versa: The dimmer is only suitable for halogen lamps or light bulbs. You should be able to find the answer on the packaging. The only solution here is to buy a suitable lamp or get a new dimmer.

However, if your lamp flickers irregularly, the cause may be a defective power supply unit. In this case, you should have the power supply replaced or repaired. But maybe the flickering is just the first sign that the LED is broken. If the LEDs are not permanently installed, you can simply replace them. Otherwise they might be repairable. It will cause confusion if the LED flickers even though it has no power. But that too can happen. In this case, it is advisable to obtain expert advice. The light switch may have been installed incorrectly.

A power failure in the house is always annoying. A quick look into the fuse box helps to find a solution. Did the fuse just blow or is the problem somewhere else?

Power failure can have many reasons

There can be many reasons for a power failure in the house. It is best to try to find out the causes step by step after the process of elimination. In the event of a severe storm, for example, a lightning strike, e.g. in a substation, can be responsible for leaving several households without electricity. So if you look out the window and everything is dark (in the evening), you probably won’t be alone with the power failure.

What is an RCD?

You may have heard the term “RCD” before. Colloquially, it is the designation for the residual current circuit breaker, which has been mandatory since February 1, 2009. Retrofitting does not necessarily have to be carried out in old buildings if the installation complied with the safety regulations of the time. However, if you significantly change or modernize such older electrical installations in an old building, retrofitting with residual current circuit breakers becomes a must. RCDs can therefore be found in newer houses or apartments in every electrical box. The “F” stands for error and the “I” corresponds to the formula symbol for current.

The FI switch breaks the circuit in the entire house as soon as an irregularity occurs in the mains. In a fraction of a second, the FI switch then switches off the current flow in the entire area. In order to be able to detect the irregularity, the current flowing in and out of the switch is continuously measured. Without a difference, the measured value is zero. However, if either more current flowing away or more current flowing in is measured, a difference arises, the RCD is triggered and the current flow is stopped.

If you can’t just turn the RCD that jumped out back on and it jumps right back, you should work through the cause of the error step-by-step.

How to deal with a power outage

First, turn off all fuses. They protect the power lines from overloading, for example, and switch off to prevent damage. If the electrician did a good job, you should be able to find a list on the inside of the electrical box door that shows the fuse assignments. Now try turning the RCD back on. If it flies out again immediately, you have to unplug all devices in the entire house or apartment from the power supply. If you still can’t turn the GFCI back on after this, you probably have a more complicated issue. Then it is advisable to call in an electrician you trust.

However, if the RCD turns on again after you’ve turned off all the fuses, you can just turn them on again one at a time. As soon as the FI switch flies out again, you have initially found the faulty circuit. In the kitchen, for example, this could be the fuses for the stove, refrigerator, dishwasher and sockets.

The next thing you have to do is find the device that is causing the fuse to turn off. Disconnect the devices in the faulty area (e.g. in the kitchen) from the circuit by simply pulling out all the plugs. Switch the RCD on again and gradually reconnect the devices to the mains. As soon as the FI switch switches off again, you have found the source of the power failure. If in doubt, the device or the socket is defective and must either be repaired or replaced.

When does the insurance pay?

A power failure can cause major damage in the house or apartment. Food can spoil, electrical devices such as televisions, PCs or laptops can break. Who is responsible for the damage in such a case? Basically, the polluter pays principle applies. The network operator is liable for damage caused by mains overvoltages in the event of a power failure. That’s what the Federal Court of Justice decided. In order to receive compensation, you must:
prove the direct connection between power failure and damage,
inform the network operator immediately (he is liable, not your electricity provider!),
document the damage with photos and, if necessary, name witnesses.
However, if the power failure was caused by force majeure, such as a lightning strike, the network operator is not liable. Whether your household contents insurance covers damage caused by a power failure, for example caused by defective appliances or sockets, depends on the contract. In the basic protection, a power failure does not usually represent an insured risk. However, this can be included in the insurance cover for a surcharge with many insurance companies.

With the support of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture and SELEGGT, the Rewe Group has now succeeded in presenting a market-ready method for sex determination in the hatching egg, which aims to end chick shredding in Germany. You can now buy respect eggs!

The Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, and SELEGGT Managing Director Dr. On November 8, 2018, in Berlin, Ludger Breloh and the deputy CEO of the REWE Group Jan Kunath presented the market-ready method for sex determination in the hatching egg. The SELECT process is a huge success in the fight against chick killing. You can find out exactly what the so-called respect eggs are all about here.

Consumers expect more commitment to animal welfare

In Germany alone, 45 million male chicks are shredded every year – their rearing is uneconomical because male chicks do not put on enough meat when fattened.

For this reason, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) has been funding methods for sex determination of chicks directly in the hatching egg for years with a total of around five million euros. The aim of the procedure is that male chicks are not hatched and are killed immediately after hatching. Thanks to the SELECT process, there will be no need to shred chicks in the near future.

More and more people are speaking out against the killing of animals and factory farming – large retail chains are now trying to react to consumers, taking responsibility and playing an important pioneering role. buy respect eggs now
Customers can now buy the first free-range respect eggs in 223 Rewe and Penny stores (only in Berlin for the time being). The respect eggs “without killing chicks” have a seal on the packaging and each individual egg is marked with a “respect” stamp. By the end of 2019, these eggs will be available for sale in all German Rewe supermarkets and in the group’s own Penny stores.

The increase in the price of eggs is hardly noticeable to consumers. The 6-pack of respeggt eggs should only cost 10 cents more than a free-range pack of the same size.

Both the responsible Rewe manager and the SELEGGT managing director are in favor of wanting completely abolishing chicken shredding in Germany. To make this possible, they want to make the process available to the entire industry as a cost-neutral service as soon as it is mature.

Germany is thus the first to introduce a method that can end the killing of chicks in hatcheries. From 2020, the first hatcheries will be offered the patented process for use. Whether this will then also be mandatory for hatcheries or can only be used on a voluntary basis is still unclear and will probably cause further discussion in the future.

Select method: This is how the sex in the hatching egg is determined

The method is based on endocrinological sex determination in the hatching egg. The nine-day incubated egg is first checked for fertilization. Once it is fertilized, lasers are used to create a pinhole in the incubator and a small amount of allantoic fluid is removed.

This procedure has no negative effects on the incubation egg since the inside is not touched. The sex of the chicks can be determined by the allantoic fluid. The accuracy of the determination would be around 98 percent with this method.

The male incubator eggs are processed into high-quality feed and the females go back into the incubator. The small hole that was created closes itself again. On the 21st day of incubation, the female chicks hatch.

Whether swimming pools, yoga or fitness studios: Most facilities that serve sporting activities are currently closed due to corona. But that’s no reason to hang up your sports shoes, because right now jogging is considered one of the most suitable sports.

4 reasons why jogging in Corona times is a good idea

Reason 1: No contacts – you train alone

You don’t necessarily need a partner for a run. To keep things interesting, you can listen to music or podcasts through headphones.

However, you may go outside with one person from your own household. Give other walkers or athletes a wide enough berth and choose paths that aren’t overly busy, such as country lanes or areas on the outskirts of town.

Reason 2: strengthening for the immune system

Running not only trains your muscles and cardiovascular system, but also your immune system. As a result, you don’t get sick as easily. Because when you jog, you not only absorb vitamin D from the sun, you also release killer cells and lymphocytes. These are immune cells that protect us from viruses and bacteria. Regular exercise therefore contributes to protection against diseases.

However, you should not exhaust yourself too much when running, you should not jog too fast or for too long – especially if you are a beginner. This overstrains the body and triggers the opposite effect (open windows effect): the body releases more of the hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which reduces the production of killer cells and lymphocytes. As a result, you are more susceptible to infections after exercising. It is therefore better to train at a slow to moderate pace and increase your distances instead of wanting to crack the ten-kilometer hurdle right away.

Reason 3: Exercise as a mood booster

The current situation is not easy for many and triggers inner stress. This means that in many people, the body is currently also increasingly producing the stress hormones just mentioned. Running can help here, because at a moderate pace it reduces the release of stress hormones and helps to clear your head.

In addition, when you run, your body produces more of the hormones norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. These happiness hormones avoid mood swings and create positive feelings in you – your mood improves.

Reason 4: All you need is shoes and a step outside the front door

Since (almost) all fitness studios, swimming pools and yoga studios are currently closed, there is not much else left to do (endurance) sports. Try it, give running a chance. All you need is sports shoes and breathable clothing. Nice weather and music or podcasts can motivate, as can progress, which becomes more noticeable from time to time.

Beginners can walk briskly for 20 to 30 minutes at the beginning. Gradually, you can alternate walking and jogging slowly for about a minute, walking for a minute. However, avoid doing this training on public sports facilities, as these are currently closed. It is better to find a path that is not too crowded and has enough sunshine.

Important: Only go jogging if you feel healthy enough to do so! When you have symptoms of illness, exertion damages the body and slows recovery. In such cases, it is better to rest and inform your family doctor.
