This means that every two seconds an area of ​​primeval forest the size of a soccer field disappears. According to a study by the Industry Association for Personal Care and Detergents, every German uses around 64 rolls of toilet paper per year.

With our consumption, we are in the middle of the field worldwide. In the south, in Spain for example, only about half of our toilet paper requirements are consumed, while in Sweden twice as much. Americans top the list using an average of 141 rolls per capita per year.

Alternative to toilet paper: rainforest becomes toilet paper

The consumer determines the market – this is also the case here in Germany with toilet paper. Since we Germans prefer to use comfortable, white, soft, multi-layer, tear-resistant and fragrant toilet paper, the market also responds to our request. Since 1928, new toilet paper has been produced for us from freshly cut trees. For the production of toilet paper, the jungle has to give way for the cultivation of suitable trees, which are planted like plantations on the cleared jungle area.

Usually these are eucalyptus trees. The largest planting areas of eucalyptus plantations are in Brazil, Chile, Canada, Russia and Uruguay. In addition to eucalyptus, the woods of birch and spruce are suitable for processing. Cellulose fibers are required for the processing of toilet paper. To do this, these fibers must be detached from the wood of the tree in a specific process. However, around half of the tree is unusable for the production process and is burned after processing. Another problem: around 12,000 liters of water per hectare of plantation area are needed per day for eucalyptus plantations, as the Tropical Forest Foundation explains. This lowers the groundwater level drastically.

What a waste for a disposable item! Around 122,000 square kilometers of rainforest were lost last year for reasons such as the production of toilet paper. 42,100 square kilometers of it were previously untouched jungle. After long transport routes, the pulp finally reaches Germany from the production countries for further processing. There, the toilet paper is finished using a high level of energy and water consumption and is then placed on the shelves for us.

Especially when the drain is clogged and the water drains slowly or not at all. In severe cases, this can lead to real flooding. There is no need to call a plumber or use highly caustic chemical drain cleaners to fix the problem. These are just expensive and a burden on the environment. Simple tips and tricks from the household do just as well and provide immediate relief.

What is the reason?

First of all, a distinction must be made as to why the toilet is clogged. If objects have fallen in or too much toilet paper has been thrown in, other methods should be used than if limescale is preventing the drain, for example.

The most tried-and-tested means is the commercially available plunger, which is intended to loosen the blockage by means of overpressure. If this is not in the house, an empty plastic bottle can be used as an alternative. To do this, the bottom of the bottle is cut off and the cut-out area is placed on the drain in the water. By squeezing the bottle, like with a plunger, a pressure is created that loosens blockages. Just pump as you would with a plunger and something should move.

If something is very stuck or has fallen into the toilet, a long rubber glove can be used as the most unsightly alternative to fish out the culprit. Clever hangers can also try to solve something with the help of an unfolded steel coat hanger. Of course, these things must also be available, if not, simple tricks that can be found in every household are used.

Clean clogged toilet drain

If the water no longer wants to drain, simple but effective home remedies can be used. Hot water often plays a role in this. Just boil water and pour it into the bowl. Wait a few minutes and in the best-case scenario, the problem is already solved.

If the constipation is more stubborn, other means are used. The washing-up liquid from the kitchen can be tried as the next available option. Simply pour plenty of washing-up liquid into the toilet and then pour a small pot of boiling water over it. Repeat the process over the next hour or two and the toilet should flush again with no problems.

A mixture can be conjured up from a few ingredients so that the toilet can function more quickly. For this purpose, half a cup of baking soda and table salt are mixed with two spoons of cream of tartar and poured into the toilet bowl. Shortly thereafter, give another pot of hot water afterward. After a while, the toilet should be fully operational again.

Coca-Cola is often mentioned as an alternative. All that can be said is that it is better to drink it than pour it down the toilet and hope that it will solve your problem. Above all, the explosive mixture with Mentos and Cola is strongly discouraged.

Generally with clogged drains, whether in the shower or toilet, a baking soda-vinegar mixture has always proven its worth. Pour two to four tablespoons of baking soda down the drain and add vinegar directly. The sodium bicarbonate and the acidity of the vinegar create carbon dioxide when they come together. You should only hear a hissing or bubbling sound. A few more minutes of patience and everything should work properly again. To be on the safe side, warm water can be poured onto this mixture again. This does not change the effectiveness but goes one step further against constipation.

If you want to clean areas that are above the water surface, you can simply soak a piece of toilet paper in vinegar and apply it to the affected area. After a few hours of exposure, you can flush the toilet as normal and then use the toilet brush to remove the brown limescale in the toilet.

2) Counter unsightly discoloration with citric acid

You can use citric acid to combat brown lime in a similar way to vinegar. To do this, dissolve the citric acid powder, put it in the toilet, and let it work for several hours. Then use the toilet brush to scrub off the discoloration directly.

Alternatively, you can also apply the powder undiluted to the affected areas, including under the edge. Then leave it on for a few hours and scrub it off with the toilet brush. Then rinse thoroughly. The advantage of this method is that, unlike vinegar, it does not lead to an unpleasant smell and is just as effective.

3) Remove brown encrustation with steel wool

If the brown crust is really stuck in the drain area, you can also try steel wool as a last resort. This will damage the ceramic somewhat, but the brown lime can be easily brushed off. However, proceed as carefully as possible so that, in case of doubt, small scratches remain.

4) Remove brown limescale in the toilet with special tabs

If the brown encrustation still cannot be removed, the following will help: Self-active against urine scale and brown calcification are special tabs for the toilet, which work deep into the drain even in the water. Only to be recommended! The application is very simple: Put “Corega Tabs” in the toilet overnight and the next morning everything is snow white again.
