Maragogype

Maragogype beans are a cross between Arabica and Liberica. However, no one knows exactly whether the crossing was caused by a mutation or by intentional breeding. The beans are significantly larger than regular Arabica beans – around 30% to 40%. That is why they are also called elephant beans. Although the beans are larger, the harvest yield is lower.

This coffee is mainly grown in Mexico and Nicaragua, but there are also other growing countries. Brewed, the Maragogype is mild and low in acid. Since it should be roasted very carefully, it can usually only be found in special roasting houses. The Maragogype is suitable for almost all types of preparation, but it is mostly used in the French press and the filter coffee machine. Therefore, it is roasted rather lighter. To avoid burning the beans during roasting, some roasters roast it twice.
