The best cinnamon rolls!

Who doesn’t love this cinnamon-sweet treat?! But yeast dough treats in particular are not that easy to make. Sometimes the dough does not rise or is too dry. However, with the addition of mashed sweet potatoes in this cinnamon roll cake, that problem isn’t there.

For the puree, the sweet potato simply has to be boiled and then pureed. It couldn’t be easier! With good organic spelled flour, the sweet treat becomes even healthier.

Sweet potatoes are so healthy

Sweet potatoes contain a lot of beta-carotene. This can be converted into vitamin A in the body and has a cell-protecting effect and strengthens our immune system. In addition, the vegetable provides more fat-soluble vitamin E than any other low-fat vegetable. 100 grams of sweet potatoes already cover a third of the daily requirement. Vitamin E protects cells and prevents fatty acids and other fat-soluble vitamins in our bodies from aging too quickly.

There is also plenty of potassium in the sweet potatoes, which regulates the fluid balance in the body: it flushes out excess water and can lower high blood pressure.

This healthy tuber can be on the menu more often. The first thing you should do is make these deliciously fluffy sweet potato cinnamon rolls yourself!

The recipe for the sweet potato cinnamon rolls

Ingredients for 14 cinnamon rolls

For the dough:

  • 160 ml milk
  • 115g butter
  • 1 egg (L)
  • 1 sweet potato
  • 390 g spelled flour
  • 70 grams of brown sugar
  • ¼ yeast cube
  • ½ tsp salt

For the filling:

  • 50 grams of brown sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter

For the glaze:

  • 115 g cream cheese
  • 50 grams of brown sugar
  • 1 pinch of cinnamon
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 3 tbsp milk

Preparation:

  1. Peel the sweet potato and let it cook. Then puree to a pulp.
  2. Bring the milk to a simmer, do not let it boil over. Remove from the heat and add the butter until melted.
  3. Pour the mixture into a small bowl and let cool slightly. Then add the egg, yeast, and sweet potato puree.
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, and salt.
  4. In a food processor or with a wooden spoon, mix the dough thoroughly until elastic. Place in a buttered bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours.
  5. When the dough is ready, prepare the filling: mix the sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Melt the butter over low heat.
  6. Grease a springform pan and dust the worktop with flour. The dough should now have doubled in size.
  7. Roll out the yeast dough into a rectangle (about 25 x 30 cm). Spread the melted butter evenly on top and sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture on top. Now roll up the dough and pinch the ends together. Cut into 14 rolls and place in the springform pan, spiral side up. Cover with cling film and let rise for another 60 to 90 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and bake the sweet potato cinnamon rolls until golden, about 20 to 25 minutes. Take out and let cool down a bit.
  9. For the glaze, mix together the cream cheese, sugar, and salt. Gradually mix with a spoonful of milk until the desired consistency is reached. Loosen the springform and sprinkle the cinnamon roll cake with the glaze. Enjoy!

Ingredients for 2 people

  • 1/2 liter of milk
  • 50 g soft wheat semolina
  • sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 pinch of salt

Preparation of semolina porridge with cinnamon and sugar

  1. Pour the milk into a saucepan, reserving about 1/2 cup.
  2. Bring the milk to a boil in a saucepan with a pinch of salt. Then stir in the semolina and pour over the rest of the milk when everything is cooked. Now stir constantly on a medium flame for about 2 to 3 minutes until the semolina porridge has a nice creamy consistency.
  3. Now just serve with simple sugar and cinnamon mixture and refine with melted butter.

Useful additional knowledge

  • The cream is also suitable as a refinement.
  • You can refine your sugar and cinnamon mixture as you like with seasonal spices or according to your taste. Vanilla is very good for giving things a fresh touch.
  • It is better to use a stainless steel pot, as the semolina porridge does not burn as quickly. It also helps to prevent the pot from burning if you rub the bottom of the pot with a little butter.

Whether in hot apple juice, on pancakes or in cookies: cinnamon is not only versatile as a spice, but also has a reputation as a remedy. Depending on the variety, cinnamon should also be consumed with caution. We explain why.

Cinnamon and its origin

Cinnamon is actually the bark of a tropical tree. The trees are mainly found in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and China and can grow up to twelve meters high. However, only shrub-high plantations are planted for the cultivation and sale of cinnamon.

For cinnamon production, the bark is dried and sold either as cinnamon sticks or ground. This works best after the four-month rainy season, when the bark is particularly flexible.

There are two types of cinnamon: Cassia and Ceylon.
The more common variety is Cassia cinnamon. It comes from southern China – the bark of the Cassia cinnamon tree is removed in thick layers. It is coarser, darker and smells more intense than Ceylon cinnamon. Because its quality is slightly lower, cassia cinnamon is cheaper.
Ceylon cinnamon is harvested in very thin layers of bark, which are then pinned together to resemble a cigar in appearance. Ceylon is more aromatic and less pungent compared to cassia. However, its noble quality makes it many times more expensive than cassia cinnamon.

Cinnamon – Healthy or Toxic?

There are repeated warnings against consuming too large amounts of cinnamon. The reason for this is the curamine flavoring substance contained in cinnamon, which is toxic to humans in large quantities.

The cheaper cassia cinnamon contains curamine in comparatively large amounts. Ceylon cinnamon, on the other hand, contains hardly any curamine and is therefore usually harmless.

Regardless, cinnamon has some health benefits:
Cinnamon has a regulating effect on the blood sugar level and can lower it.
Cinnamon promotes appetite and stimulates intestinal activity. This helps prevent bloating and gas.
Cinnamon also has a disinfecting effect due to the essential oil it contains, eugenol.
This is why cinnamon also helps relieve cold symptoms.
A student at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia also found that smelling cinnamon boosts brain power.
Cinnamon also has an effect on cholesterol levels and helps to lower them.
Because of the curamine, however, pregnant women in particular should check with a doctor beforehand whether they are allowed to eat cinnamon.

Ideas with cinnamon

Cinnamon goes well with many dishes and drinks and gives them a special touch:
We especially like to use cinnamon with apples – whether for apple fritters, in hot apple juice, in apple compote or in apple strudel.
Cinnamon can also spice up other juices, whether cold or warm.
Cinnamon gives many jams a Christmassy touch.
Coffee, cocoa, a glass of milk or milk substitute – cinnamon goes with everything.
A light note of cinnamon also goes well with many teas – or, of course, with mulled wine or punch.
Cinnamon can refine many pastries: Whether as cinnamon rolls, cinnamon rolls or classic as cinnamon stars or as a special tip: homemade Franzbrötchen. For this you need a slightly sweetened yeast dough, because you roll it out flat and spread it with a paste made of fine sugar, cinnamon and oil or melted butter. Then you roll the whole thing into a roll and cut the roll so that it has sloping sides. Then you can flatten the individual pieces and get the typical fan-shaped structure of Franzbrötchen.
Thanks to its disinfecting properties, you can also use cinnamon to treat gingivitis – as a diluted oil or as a gargling solution.

Cinnamon is one of the most popular spices. The Ceylon cinnamon variety is not only delicious, it is also considered to be particularly healthy. But is that really true?

Ceylon cinnamon is obtained from the bark of the Ceylon cinnamon tree. The tree originally came from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) – hence the name. Today, however, Ceylon cinnamon is also grown in other regions of South Asia, such as the Seychelles and Madagascar.

Although Ceylon cinnamon is probably the best-known type of cinnamon, we mainly get the Chinese variety Cassia cinnamon in this country. Because it is cheaper and has a stronger aroma. If you buy cinnamon sticks, you can recognize real Ceylon cinnamon by the fact that the sticks are fine-leaved and consist of several thin layers.

How healthy is Ceylon cinnamon?

The interesting components of cinnamon are the essential oils, of which the cinnamon bark contains up to four percent. The so-called cinnamaldehyde has the largest share in this. This substance gives Ceylon cinnamon and the other varieties their characteristic aroma. The remaining components of the essential oils are partly different for the two types. This applies, for example, to these two substances:
Eugenol: While Ceylon cinnamon contains up to ten percent of the substance, cassia cinnamon contains almost zero. Eugenol is one of the polyphenols that are known as cell-protecting antioxidants. A study on cell cultures and rats confirms that eugenol has an antioxidant effect. However, the study does not show whether this substance also has a positive effect on the human body. Nor can she explain how eugenol works in conjunction with the other ingredients in Ceylon cinnamon.
Coumarin: Here it’s the other way around: according to Foodwatch, cassia cinnamon contains about 200 times more coumarin than Ceylon cinnamon, and Stiftung Warentest came to a similar conclusion. The substance is considered liver-damaging if you ingest too much of it. Cassia cinnamon contains so much that you already reach the recommended maximum limit with two grams of it per day.
Since Ceylon cinnamon contains significantly less coumarin than cassia cinnamon, it is healthier, at least in larger amounts.

There are many studies that have examined cinnamon itself and have found different positive effects – for both varieties. The following two reviews summarize some study results:
A 2014 review cites studies concluding that cinnamon is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial. It is also said to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s. However, just as in the case of eugenol, human clinical trials are lacking.
Another review looks at studies looking at whether cinnamon can lower blood pressure. The available studies seem to confirm this, but the authors of the review come to the conclusion that there are too few studies to clearly demonstrate an antihypertensive effect.
Overall, there is a lot of evidence that both Ceylon and Cassia cinnamon are healthy, even if there have been too few clinical studies to date. Because it contains a lot of coumarin, you should only use it very sparingly – especially if children are eating with you.

Cinnamon sugar tastes delicious on many desserts. You only need the two ingredients cinnamon and sugar – and in the right proportion. We explain how you can mix cinnamon sugar.

In most households, rice pudding and semolina pudding are never served without cinnamon sugar. But the right cinnamon-sugar mixture also goes well with yeast dumplings and other sweets and desserts.

Cinnamon sugar can be bought premixed in the supermarket. These not only come with additional packaging, but sometimes also contain other unnecessary ingredients such as flavors. That’s why we recommend that you simply make your own cinnamon sugar. So in the end there is really only cinnamon and sugar in the mixture – and you can adjust the ratio to suit your taste.

Mixing Cinnamon Sugar: The Right Ratio

Ultimately, of course, it comes down to individual taste as to the ratio of cinnamon and sugar that goes best together. However, a standard mixture has been established that tastes good to most people and can serve as a rule of thumb. According to this, the perfect cinnamon sugar is mixed in this ratio:
10 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
Variations: Some find this blend too sweet. In this case, you can halve the amount of sugar. In the low-sugar kitchen you can also mix cinnamon and sugar in a ratio of 1:1 – this will then have a much more intense taste.

Cinnamon sugar: which sugar and which cinnamon?

Sure, cinnamon sugar only needs two ingredients: cinnamon and sugar. But nevertheless, or precisely because of this, the quality of these is crucial:
You can use either white or brown sugar.
Beet sugar, cane sugar and raw cane sugar: In our special article on the subject, we explain the differences and tell you what is important when it comes to sugar.
Alternatively, you can use a sugar substitute for the cinnamon sugar mixture. Above all, birch sugar (xylitol) and erythritol are recommended for this, as they behave in a similar way to ordinary sugar. Both sugar alternatives are suitable for diabetics.
When it comes to cinnamon, it mainly depends on the variety: Cassia cinnamon or Ceylon cinnamon. Cassia cinnamon is significantly cheaper, but contains more coumarin – a substance that can be harmful to health in larger quantities. If you frequently use cinnamon sugar, it is better to use Ceylon cinnamon.

Lose weight with cinnamon? That’s not so far-fetched, because there are many health-promoting substances in the Christmas spice. But there are also a few things to consider. Learn more about the cinnamon diet here.

When it comes to cinnamon, few people immediately think of losing weight, but rather of Christmas cookies. Cinnamon also gives curries, homemade spice mixtures or chai lattes a special taste. The spice is made from the bark of the cinnamon tree, which belongs to the laurel family. Only two types of cinnamon are important here in Germany: Cassia cinnamon and Ceylon cinnamon. You can find more information about the types of cinnamon here: Cinnamon: effects, ingredients and differences between the types.

Cinnamon is not only a delicious spice, but is also considered a medicinal plant. It contains many phytochemicals, can help to regulate blood sugar levels and is even said to be able to prevent cancer. Due to its ingredients, cinnamon can also help with weight loss.

How does cinnamon help you lose weight?

The cinnamon diet is touted in many lifestyle magazines. And not without good reason: In fact, there is evidence that cinnamon can help you lose weight – due to its ingredients and in connection with a balanced, healthy diet.

Cinnamon has been shown to help lower blood sugar levels. Several studies have demonstrated this effect. Taking cinnamon lowers insulin levels and instead of breaking down sugar in the blood, it breaks down body fat.
Another study suggests that ingesting cinnamon causes the stomach to empty more slowly. As a result, the feeling of fullness lasts longer after meals and you eat less.
Cinnamon is considered a warming spice. The heat development in the body consumes additional energy and accordingly cinnamon could help with weight loss.

What you should consider with the cinnamon diet

Even small amounts of cinnamon (about one gram per day) are enough to maintain the health-promoting effects. The Federal Center for Nutrition (BZfE) recommends taking a maximum of two grams of cinnamon per day, as the spice contains a lot of the natural flavoring substance coumarin:

The lower-quality, cheaper cassia cinnamon in particular contains a lot of coumarin.
Some people are very sensitive to taking coumarin. Coumarin is also suspected of causing liver damage. The Federal Center for Risk Assessment (BfR) has therefore set a maximum amount of two grams of (cassia) cinnamon per day for adults (with a body weight of around 60 kilos). However, this is a guideline for daily, continuous intake.
If you do not consume cinnamon regularly, according to the BfR, it should be harmless to your health to exceed the amount of two grams. The common household cinnamon is also classified as generally harmless.
If you consume cinnamon regularly (e.g. with the cinnamon diet), the BfZE recommends buying higher-quality Ceylon cinnamon, as it has a lower coumarin content.
Pregnant women in particular are advised not to take too much cinnamon.
If you want to lose weight with cinnamon, we therefore recommend that you use Ceylon cinnamon – and not overdo it with the amounts of the spice.

Lose weight with cinnamon – that’s how it works

The most important thing first: If you want to lose weight with cinnamon, you should only do so in combination with a balanced and healthy diet. You can use the 10 rules for a balanced diet as a guide. In addition, sufficient exercise and sport is just as important.

For the cinnamon diet, you only need to include the spice in your daily menu. Half a teaspoon of cinnamon per day is enough. Since the spice goes with many dishes and drinks, it is not difficult:

You can mix cinnamon, water, and honey to make a drink that aids in digestion and helps burn fat.
Cinnamon is also a great addition to your morning coffee. By the way: There are also great regional alternatives to coffee.
Whether porridge, fruit salad or smoothie: Most sweet dishes taste great with a pinch of cinnamon. Of course, the spice also goes well with cakes and biscuits.
Cinnamon also goes well with hearty dishes such as a delicious pumpkin curry.
By the way: We at Utopia advise you to question diets. Do you want to lose weight in order to conform to a certain socially propagated ideal of beauty? Then think again. It is important that you feel comfortable in your body.

The cinnamon apple is a tropical fruit. We will tell you more about the taste, appearance, origin and sustainability of the sweet and spicy cherimoya fruit variety.

Other names for the cinnamon apple are cream apple, sweet sack or cherimoya. In the botanical name Annona squamosa, squamosa means “scaly” and thus describes the appearance of the tropical fruit well: it is usually green on the outside with a coarsely scaly structure and white on the inside. However, there are also externally yellow-green or purple cinnamon apples.

This is how the cinnamon apple grows

The tree or shrub of the cinnamon apple can grow up to six meters high. It is a very popular and widespread fruit tree in tropical and subtropical countries. The cinnamon apple originally comes from South America, but it also grows in Egypt and China.

A cinnamon apple needs a relatively large amount of water to grow, but it is also able to survive longer periods of drought. In return, he discards his leaves.

Harvest time for the cinnamon apple is from June to November. The fruits of the cinnamon apple are five to ten centimeters in diameter. When fully ripe, the flesh is very soft and juicy with a sweet taste. In most varieties there are many black-brown seeds in the cinnamon apple.

How is the cinnamon apple eaten?

To eat, you simply break open a ripe cinnamon apple and scoop it out of the skin, for example, similar to a kiwi. You should not eat the skin and especially the seeds. The latter are poisonous if you chew them. If you ever swallow a core whole, that’s no problem.

If you don’t want to eat the cinnamon apple on its own, you can also use it to make ice cream, mix it with water to make a delicious drink, or add it to a homemade milkshake.

If the cinnamon apple is not yet soft and ripe, it is best to store it at room temperature. So he can mature. Once it’s soft, you should put it in the fridge and eat it soon. The taste of the cinnamon apple is very sweet, fruity and somewhat creamy and tastes slightly of cinnamon and vanilla.

The cinnamon apple does not feel comfortable in Germany. That’s why you can only buy it as an imported product, but even as such it is not very common. The long transport unfortunately makes the custard apple problematic from an ecological point of view. The fruit therefore has a correspondingly poor ecological balance. If you have a green thumb, you can try growing the custard apple yourself. Otherwise, enjoy it in moderation.

Unfortunately, there are no local fruit varieties that are similar in taste and consistency to the cinnamon apple. Only a (vegan) vanilla ice cream with a pinch of cinnamon could mimic the flavor.
